Makeup Monday: How To (Properly) Apply Glitter Nail Polish

❤ By Hannah Blu

We can’t help but go gaga for glitter, especially when it comes to nail polish. But the messy, time-consuming process of applying (and removing) glitter lacquer often deters us from rocking the blinged-out shades we love. It’s downright exhausting having to meticulously maneuver each glitter particle into place!

With Halloween and the holiday season approaching, we needed a solution, stat. So when we learned about this amazing manicurist hack, we just had to share it! The trick is to apply glitter polish with a sponge rather than the included brush. The sponge soaks up excess polish, resulting in a perfectly opaque glitter layer. Follow these easy steps for swoon-worthy sparkly nails!

What You’ll Need:

  • A smoothing base coat
  • A peel-off nail polish barrier (we used Kiesque Liquid Palisade, but any brand of liquid latex will do)
  • A triangle makeup sponge
  • Glitter nail polish (we used Deborah Lippmann “Happy Birthday”)
  • A high-shine, quick-dry top coat

What You’ll Do:

Step 1: Apply a layer of base coat. This gives the glitter something to adhere to, upping the longevity of your mani.

Step 2: Apply a peel-off nail polish barrier to the surrounding cuticle.

Step 3: Paint a generous amount of your favorite glitter nail polish onto the edge of the sponge.

Step 4: Dab the glitter polish onto your nail with the sponge and repeat until you’re satisfied with the coverage.

Step 5: Carefully peel off the nail polish barrier.

Step 6: Apply a generous layer of top coat to smooth out and lock in the glitter.

…And that’s it! You can finally achieve the accent nail of your dreams – life-changing, right?

Makeup Monday: Designated Smoky Section

❤️ By Hannah Blu

It might seem like it would take a lifetime to master the sultry, lived-in smoky eye you see on all your favorite celebs. But it actually only takes a few simple steps – and even fewer products – to achieve this dreamy makeup look.

The key to a chic, effortless smoky eye is a warm-toned matte crease, which gives the look a softer, more seamless effect. In fact, we’re forgoing shimmer and shine altogether and opting for an all-matte style that is super smoldering and totally cool…

What You’ll Need:

What You’ll Do:

  1. Apply a crease-proof eye shadow primer all over the lid from lashline to browbone.
  2. Line the upper lashline with a smudgy black kohl pencil. (It doesn’t have to be perfect – we’re gonna smudge it out during the next step.)
  3. Using a pencil brush, take a matte black eyeshadow and gently smudge the kohl liner into the lashline.
  4. Use a small, flat brush to apply the same black eyeshadow in upward strokes from the lashline toward the outer corner of the eye.
  5. Apply a warm terracotta eyeshadow to the crease using a fluffy brush, blending out any harsh lines as you go.
  6. Apply the black eyeshadow along the lower lashline using your pencil brush.
  7. With the pencil brush, blend the terracotta shade into the black eyeshadow on the lower lashline.
  8. Line the lower waterline with the black kohl eyeliner.
  9. Curl your lashes and add as many coats of mascara as your little heart desires.
