Warning! Graphic Content Ahead: This Summer’s “Statement” Pieces

If there’s something to be said about this summer, it’s that whatever needs to be said can be said by a T-shirt. Graphic tees have always been in circulation (how else would we know that Britney is the American Dream? Or that Cara Delevingne only had one “Last clean t-shirt” left before London Fashion Week?), but these days, we’re seeing more and more words and phrases that have permeated our lives and vocabularies also invade our closets. Ready to make a statement of your own? Well, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite types of fashion graphics. Take a look. Maybe you’ll find one that speaks to you.

Jersey Girl

1. Mesh You Up 23 Cropped Tank, 2. Good Sport 25 Jersey Dress, 3. Sheer NY 83 Dress, 4. Quilted Number 6 Sweatshirt, 5. Good Sport Number 17 Cropped Tee, 6. Varsity Track Shorts

Jersey Girl – With the emergence of joggers, varsity jackets, and dolphin hem shorts, the sporty trend has scored a status as a perennial style of dress for both athletes and faux Sporty Spices alike. While the look can be achieved with a simple yoga pant and striped-sleeve tee, you can really hit it out of the park with a jersey-inspired top or dress like the ones above. No sweaty locker room, no grass stains, and no worrying about needing to take a five. In fact, take a ten. Don’t even take the field if you don’t want to. You’ll still look the part, and in our playbook, that’s a win.

Made Of Awesome

1. Dripping Rad Cropped Tank, 2. Kool-Kid Graphic Tank, 3. Killin’ It All The Time Graphic Tee, 4. So Dope Graphic Tee, 5. Hello My Name Is Fabulous Muscle Tee, 6. Dope Life Bandana Bordered Tee, 7. Feeling French Embellished Tank

Made Of Awesome – In the words of LMFAO, you’re sexy, and you know it. And rad. And cool. And dope. And fabulous. Basically you’re made of awesome. So there’s no reason why everyone else shouldn’t know it too, right? Come on. You spend all week killin’ it at work or school. You deserve to give yourself a little love…in the form of a top that proclaims that love for all to see, points to it even. “I love you” is so overrated. Maybe this summer you should say “I love me.”

Statement Piece

1. First Let Me Take A Selfie Oversized Tee, 2. Reckless Love Story Muscle Tank Top, 3. Cat’s Meow Paris Chain Frame Tee, 4. Girls Just Wanna Have $Fund$ Cropped Top, 5. Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It Graphic Tee, 6. Don’t Trip Graphic Tee, 7. Hate Mondays Sad Face Slashed Tank

Statement Piece – Got something to say? Forget wearing your heart on just your sleeve. Now your whole shirt can do the talking for you. Whether it’s a bad selfie habit, an inclination to twerk, a weakness for gangsta rap, or an extreme hostility toward the start of the work week, go ahead and put it on display. Whatever your aversion or affinity, chances are there’s a graphic tee out there for you to express it. After all, that’s what fashion is here for – making a statement.

Fashion Hacks: How To Remove Stains

tumblr_mdrz2tIw6h1qgsr1po1_500

Messy eater? Clumsy wine drinker? Overall klutz? If we could wear bibs 24/7 without looking like toddlers, we would. Basically, we know that feel, so we’re presenting fashion hacks, the stain removal edition. Those cute duds of yours should stay that way.

Here’s a top tip: do NOT let the stain set. It basically means there’s a chemical interaction and the stain will bond with the fabric fibers. This is a big no-no. So don’t apply any kind of direct heat because it will help set the stain. Okay, moving on… Here are ten stains we inevitably find ourselves battling and a way to banish them from your closet.

1. Blood – Got a boo-boo? Riding the crimson wave? (Just keeping it real, ladies.) Rinse the stain in cool water and soak in lukewarm water with detergent for ten to fifteen minutes. Spot treat with an enzyme cleaner and launder as usual.

2. Lipstick – Oops, you missed the mark? No big deal. Try sponging or dabbing rubbing alcohol onto the stain.

3. Coffee – We need our caffeine fix, and a cup of Joe all over your new skirt could happen. Blot the stain with cold water using paper towels or a cloth. Pre-treat with detergent. Got an extra stubborn stain? Beat an egg yolk, add a little bit of warm water and a dash of rubbing alcohol, and dab onto the stain.

4. Tomato Sauce – Mmmmm. Spaghetti… Crap. We dropped a meatball. Dab and blot with a mixture of vinegar and water to help lift the stain.

5. Mud/Dirt – Working in the yard and outdoor adventuring is always cool. Mud and dirt stains? Not so much. Allow mud to dry and brush it off. Blot the stain with a clean, damp cloth. Flush with cool water. For a strong stain, try rubbing alcohol, then launder.

6. Foundation – Had a field day at the makeup counter trying on foundation? We totes understand because it’s really hard to color match. If you had a little accident, remove foundation by applying shaving cream to the spot and give it a good wash. If it’s an extra deep stain you can try an additional dab of rubbing alcohol.

7. Wine – Wine more, whine less… Isn’t that the saying? But we can’t have stains ruining our good time, so try these listed solutions.

  1. Red wine – Pour white wine (ironic, isn’t it?) onto the stain and let it soak. Wash in cold water and ammonia. Rinse thoroughly.
  2. White wine – Wash in cold water and ammonia. Rinse thoroughly.

8. Fake Tanner – Saving yourself UV damage and using fake tanner instead? You go, girl! If you smudged some on your clothes, don’t worry. Dab on peroxide to help the stain lift.

9. Butter/Cooking Oil – Fresh baked cookies? Count us in. If you dropped butter or cooking oil on yourself you can remove it with an overnight treatment of baby powder or corn starch to help suck up the grease. Launder as usual!

10. Perspiration – SoulCycle classes, stressful job interviews, and meeting James Franco make us perspire (that’s the ladylike way of saying sweat). Perspiration stains are, like, so persona non grata on our clothes. Try removing the stain with three powdered aspirin pills mixed in warm water. Leave the solution on for up to an hour and rinse in warm water. Repeat if necessary and follow up with vinegar for some extra stain fighting power. Launder as usual.

Got any other tips to share? Tell us in the comments. Plus, now that you have all of this precious knowledge at your fingertips, the first thing you gotta do is get some white clothing!

10 Trends (Under $10) To Try Before Summer Ends!

Oh, no… It’s August. We’re one month closer to the first day of school. There’s only one month left for that summer vacation you’ve been saving up for. Seriously? Only one month left to find that perfect BAE to summer fling it with? Oh, the humanity! September marks (for many of us) the end of summer fun…therefore September is our new worst enemy (second to whoever started that nasty rumor that Beyoncé and Jay-Z are divorcing…noooooooo!). So for the next four weeks, we’re kicking it into high gear. Or should we say high-fashion gear? (You like what we did there?)

GoJane is all about the trends, and we’re not letting this summer end without making sure all the ladies and fabulous gents out there have tried all this season’s trends. The best thing about this list? All these summer trends are under $10. Yup. This list of must-have goodies just got that much sweeter.

$10. Basic Bodycon Dresses

Once it gets chilly outside, you’re gonna wish it was still warm enough to prance around town in a skimpy little number like this. You better take advantage of your summer bod and get it right and get it tight (the dress, that is).

$9. Brave + Bold Accessories

This summer was all about loud prints. But not everyone was down to rock this look head-to-toe, nor were they brave enough to let a main piece do all the talking. Our solution to that? Just choose one accessory and make sure it adds all the printed-punch your outfit needs.

$8. Summer Sayings Tees + Tanks

We know your summer agenda is full of do this, do that, and definitely must do these types of things. You’re basically trying to cram a whole year’s worth of fun, fun, fun into a few months of sun. There’s no time for chit-chat. But you can still get your point across with the help of a graphic  top. Just let your shirt do all the (shit) talking.

Killin' It Graphic Racer Back

$7. Throwback/Comeback Jelly Sandals

The best comebacks of the summer? Jennifer Lopez, carbs (thanks to cronuts), and jelly sandals. The instant you slip these suckers on, you’ll be inundated with memories of nighttime bike riding sessions with your neighborhood homies, hopscotching with your sisters, and sticky hands from melted Popsicles that you just couldn’t slurp up fast enough. Now that’s summer!

Missing Link Jelly Thong Sandals

$6. A Taste Of The Tropic…Prints

A trip to Bora Bora will cost you a pretty penny (more like a million pennies). So let’s give off that island-girl vibe with tropical prints. The moment you slip on a palm tree printed tank or a birds of paradise covered maxi dress, you’re gonna be transported to a world where coconuts are stemware and grass skirts look best on hunky bronzed boys.

Tropical Print Scarf

$5. Round(about) Sunglasses

The aviator is classic. The wayfarer is totally hip. But something about giant round sunnies says, “I’m kinda weird…but in that super fun and flirty way.” Like Kate Husdon in Almost Famous kinda weird.

Round Metallic Wire Frame Sunglasses

$4. Lacy + Racy Leggings

You’re not really a music festival queen until you’ve worn a pair of these rock goddess-inspired lacy leggings. They’re sexy, edgy, lightweight, and totally badass. Make Janis Joplin proud and get you a pair of these summertime bottoms.

All Laced Up Sheer Leggings

$3. Functional (& Totally Fun) Headbands

Summer is one sweaty season. Yes, sweat is sexy when it’s dripping off of Cristiano Ronaldo, but it’s not as sexy when it’s dripping off of your forehead and into your BFF’s mojito. Stop the sweat in its tracks with a sweet little headband. They’re best worn with messy buns and a little bit of coyness.

Lace Meets Floral Headband

$2. In-Yo-Face Neon Swimwear

You worked extra hard for that bikini body. So why go unnoticed in a boring bathing suit? Make sure all eyez are on you in a brightly hued swimsuit. Neon colored swim isn’t just for volleyball players from 1980s rom-coms. They’re made for you and your wonderful summer squatting azz!

Twist Front Bikini Brief Bottoms

$1. Candy-Coated Lips

Remember those crazy colored lips you’d get after sucking on a lollipop or a Popsicle on a hot summer’s day? Yeah, that’s the same idea here…but way less calories.

The Kimono: Summer’s Light-As-Air Outerwear

Kimonos

Our idea of the kimono today, at least in this part of the world, evokes an image that is less Madame Butterfly and more social butterfly, one with a summer calendar full of block parties, brunches, and bonfires, for which the lightweight warm-weather staple weaves together (no pun intended) the perfect amount of casual cool and effortless elegance. In contemporary fashion, the kimono is varied and versatile, with great diversity in its patterned prints, its silhouettes and cuts, its additions of unexpected fabrics and trims… We couldn’t imagine surviving a summer anymore without the draped cover-up and started longing for more information about its beginnings, about the traditional attire on which our favorite light-as-air outerwear was based. So we did a little research, some easy summer reading, if you will, and here’s what we found out.

5 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE JAPANESE KIMONO

1. Back To Basics – A kimono is a boxy, T-shaped robe with extra-wide sleeves that is wrapped around the body and tied with an obi, or sash. The traditional version is still worn for special ceremonies like weddings and funerals, while simpler variations, like the yukata summer kimono, can be seen on attendees of less formal events like summer festivals.

2. Piece Out – Customarily created using one bolt of fabric, the kimono consists of multiple straight-lined panels sewn together, which makes it a convenient article to disassemble if certain pieces are damaged or faded. (Not to mention, it’s an easy DIY for you home-seamstresses.)

3. Come Into Season – Nature is a common theme, and you can often tell by a kimono’s motif what time of year it is meant to be worn. Cherry blossoms, for example, are the epitome of springtime, while a garment bearing maple leaves perfectly represents the shift into autumn. The same can be said about an item’s color. It’s likely you will see pastels in spring, cool colors in summer… You get the pretty picture.

4. Size Does Matter – Furisode kimonos, known for their extra-long sleeves, are only worn by single women, who long ago would wave that excess fabric as a way to proclaim their love for the men in their lives. While kimonos have been able to maintain their general silhouette, that’s not to say there weren’t changes throughout the centuries, like length, sleeve size, and obi width, to name a few.

5. White On, Sister – A Japanese bride may choose to wear a shiromuku on her big day, and like the western wedding gown, this kimono is usually an all-white garment. Except in Japan, the color doesn’t signify purity or luxury but, rather, the beginning of the bride’s new journey.

Holy Slit! Our Favorite Leg-Baring Cuts For Summer

Here in sunny SoCal, we’re lucky enough to have lovely weather for most of the year, but in the middle of summer, sometimes the sun beating down on you just makes you wanna hit him right back! We’re definitely suffering through a hot one right now, and it’s got us wondering how the hell we’re gonna get ourselves through the next couple of months. Sure, an icy cold drink wouldn’t hurt, but our bodies also need to breeeeeathe. And since indecent exposure charges probably come with some hefty fines, we’ve turned our attention to the details on our clothing that might help a little with the ventilation. Specifically, our favorite leg-baring cut – the slit. Nothing opens up a piece of clothing quite like a high and mighty slit, and lucky for us, it now comes in a few different variations. We’ve rounded up some of those examples from our current collection, and we hope you’ll give ’em a try both this summer and beyond. Once that wind in your hair starts making its way between your legs, these pieces are sure to have you saying, “Holy slit, Batman!”

On The Double

1. Hey Crochet Slit Maxi Dress, 2. Double The Trouble Slit Maxi Skirt, 3. Either Way Striped Double Slit Skirt, 4. Cut That Out Halter Maxi Dress

On The Double – If you can handle the single life okay, we say why not try your hand legs at leading a double life? Double slit skirts and dresses have been all the rage for a while now, and why not, when they can give you the air and mobility of short shorts with the drama and flair of a long skirt? The paneled design on most of these pieces creates a swingy silhouette that allows your bottom half to move freely while also making for a delightful peekaboo element that stays hidden until you stick out that luscious leg of yours. Think Angelina Jolie at the 2012 Oscars. Except she only had one slit, and you’ll have two. You know what they say. Two legs are better than one.

Zip It Good

1. Zip-pin’ Out Sateen Pencil Skirt, 2. Seeing Double Zippers Maxi Skirt, 3. Double Zipper Slit Maxi Skirt, 4. Front And Center Zipper Pencil Skirt

Zip It Good – The zipper has been around for a couple centuries now, and since its inception it has graduated from being merely a fast-n-easy closure to doing double duty as a decorative element in itself. But nowadays we’re loving it as the pull-up partner to the slit. It basically points to the slit as if to say “Look here! Legginess ahead!” And the slit, in turn, does its job by extending that line the zipper started. (If you don’t know, the vertical line is totally your BFF when you’re aiming for a slimmer look, since it guides the eye up and down the body.) So if you’re looking for a new way to wear a slit this summer, we hope you’ll zip it. And zip it good.

Ruche Hour

1. Ruche Hour Plunging Maxi Dress, 2. Ruched Double Slit Dress, 3. Striped Ruched Double Slit Dress, 4. In A Ruche Draped Square Back Maxi

Ruche Hour – Just like the zipper, ruched detailing is the perfect lead-in to a leg-baring slit. Even if you don’t know it by name, you’ve surely seen its effects. Ruching is responsible for that cinched and gathered look on some of your skirts and dresses. You know, the one that hides all your imperfections plays up all your assets? Pair that optical illusion trick with a high slit, and that’s preeeeetty much all you need to create that bangin’ bod you’re taking out tonight. Just do us a favor and stay away from any and all intersections, okay? Traffic is gonna be bad enough. We don’t need you stopping it.

Wear The Pants

1. Slit Happens Strappy Split Jumpsuit, 2. Split Second Petal Harem Pants, 3. Fresh As A Tulip Split Leg Pants, 4. Split Second Halter Jumpsuit

Wear The Pants – And finally, we couldn’t end this post without mentioning that slits aren’t just for skirts and dresses anymore. No, sir. Now we have split leg jumpsuits, tulip hem harem pants, slit palazzos… Not a skirt person? Not a problem. You can bare just as much leg with one of the looks above and without any danger of having one of those Marilyn Monroe subway vent moments. (Unless that’s what you’re going for, in which case you can refer to the other collages above.) So if you’re looking to let those stems of yours breathe, maybe leave the shorts at home for once. And don’t be afraid to wear the pants.

What’s in your bag?

A woman’s bag is the Holy Grail, and getting a new bag, especially one you’ve been coveting, is basically all of the best parts of a birthday rolled into one. One could argue that it’s only something to hold all of your stuff, right? Isn’t that what we always hear from our boyfriends? Really, another bag? No! It’s not just another bag. Pfft.

Bags are tools, and we have to have one for each specific occasion and mood. (Same goes for shoes. Yes, we’re enablers.) Hey, if your husband or man-friend doesn’t swing with this argument, you can tell him to go fly a kite, and also get rid of his tool collection which is probably gathering dust in the garage. Take that!

We’ve rounded up a couple of examples because we’re nosy. Go ahead and snoop around our displays below.

Exhibit A – The Backpack:

So you’re a student and running around on campus all day? A backpack is in order. Stow your laptop, books, and paper ephemera to make your day easier. Don’t forget snacks. Those mid-class hunger pangs are no joke. A hungry stomach only induces “hanger” (hungry anger) which is never helpful when taking notes.

backpackcollage

Tribal Travel Print Backpack, iPhone, Postalco Notebook, Textbooks, MacBook Air, Headphones

Exhibit B – Beach Day Tote:

You’ve put in your dues, and a day spent by the water (pool, ocean, lake) complete with your favorite tunes and a giant bottle of organic green juice is what you deserve. (Okay, we wouldn’t say no to a mojito either.) Throw in a towel, sunscreen (just say no to sunspots, wrinkles, or cancer), your fave magazines, headphones, and sunnies for a day of relaxation.

Floppy Wide Brim Woven Paper Hat, NYX Tango With Bronzing Powder, Oversized Beach Totebag, Round We Go Sunglasses, Button ‘N Buckle Thong Sandals

Exhibit C – Evening Clutch:

Heading out to have some cocktails with the ladies (or your special dude)? There’s nothing worse than digging around in a satchel while the bartender gives you the evil eye. Plus, who needs a big bag weighing down a svelte look? Keep it minimal with crucial necessities. In this case, moola, your phone, lipstick (for touch-ups), and gum (bad breath is a social faux pas nobody is on board with).

Candid Crush: 7 Reasons To Crush On Nicole Richie

Collage

Can we be honest? Nicole Richie isn’t the only one counting down to tomorrow night’s debut of her VH1 series Candidly Nicole, which marks her return to reality TV as one of its earliest stars. But since the 2003 premiere of The Simple Life, Nicole has evolved into fashion designer, philanthropist, mother, and bonafide style icon, a far cry from the girl who took Arkansas by storm with her then-real-life-bestie. This time she is creator, executive producer, and star all rolled into one with what she calls a “real life comedy,” full of her trademark irreverence and “tongue-planted-firmly-in-cheek” witticisms (that’s totally our favorite place to plant our tongues by the way). The television show is based on her popular web series (twenty million views tells us that that’s an understatement) which itself was based on her also-beloved Twitter, appropriately named by Time as one of last year’s best. So we thought it was only fitting that we use the same famous one- or two-liners today, on the eve of the premiere, to show why we’re totally crushin’ on Fashion Star Nicole Richie…

1. She knows her fashion

Tweet 08

Nicole may have started out in the public eye as one-half of a reality show duo, but since then she has immersed herself in House of Harlow 1960, her fashion brand named after her adorable doppelganger daughter. “Fashion gives you the ability to express yourself, your mood; it’s a creative outlet in many ways,” says the website. What began in 2008 as a jewelry line won her “Entrepreneur of the Year” at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards, and she’s not stopping there. Home decor launches next, and HOH will be well on its way to becoming a legitimate lifestyle brand.

2. She doesn’t take herself too seriously

Tweet 02

Some celebrities may be overly concerned with image, but Nicole has no problem making fun of herself and will use the show, like her Twitter, to display that self-deprecating humor. She told USA Today, “I’m definitely the butt of the joke in this one too, and I’m very comfortable with it.” (And we can take that quite literally. Her AOL series included a segment about her removing a “tramp stamp.”)

3. She loves her family

Tweet 03

Nicole Richie definitely has a star-studded set of kin. Lionel Richie is her father, Michael Jackson was her godfather, and she married Joel Madden of Good Charlotte, becoming sister-in-law to his twin Benji Madden. She also has a six-year-old daughter Harlow and four-year-old son Sparrow, who are as cute as the cutest child star but whom she protects by not picturing them on her social media outlets.

4. She understands relationships

Tweet 01

Speaking to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, she admitted to setting up her brother-in-law with current beau Cameron Diaz, telling him, “I’m happy for anyone who is happy, and I want everyone to be surrounded with love.” And an upcoming topic on her show? Online dating.

5. She’s a philanthropist

Tweet 04

With her husband Joel, Nicole started the Richie Madden Children’s Foundation which, among other charitable activities, has opened a Beyond Shelter playground for children in low-income neighborhoods and designed the inaugural cup for 7-Eleven’s Coffee Cup With A Cause project.

6. She keeps life interesting

Tweet 07

In February Nicole experienced the “greatest moment of [her] life” when she was taken onstage at a Britney Spears concert, strapped into a harness, walked like a dog, and spanked with a whip by her teenaged idol. The evidence of course was on her Instagram for all to envy. And recently she dyed her hair frosting-lavender simply because daughter Harlow asked why her mom didn’t dye her hair when her dad always did.

7. She likes to learn

Tweet 05

The thirty-two-year-old seems to have it all and do it all, and now the Richie-Madden family could probably open its own Whole Foods, as Nicole has created an edible garden (wearing a fanny pack and trucker hat) that includes apples, blueberries, strawberries, sugar snap peas, cauliflower, kumquats, zucchini, blood oranges… The list goes on and on. She even raises chickens in a chicken coop (and turtles in a turtle coop!) and told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that she learns by joining online forums.

And that’s exactly what her Candidly Nicole will be about – learning. From professionals in various industries. She said during her press tour, “You know, I love to learn, and I like to explore, and I like to have fun. So I’ve created a space where I can do all three.” Starting tonight, Nicole will be adding more than just gardener to her resume when she starts exploring some different walks of life, and we’re being totally honest when we say that we will be right there with her.

Tuesday Tunes: Pitchfork Music Festival

Festival season has long since kicked off, but it isn’t over yet (amen). Union Park will be hosting some pretty rad bands this year for the annual Pitchfork Music Festival, thrown by much beloved Pitchfork Media, of course. Who better to trust than one of the most vetted music review sites alive on the glorious cat-ridden waves of the internet? We love us a great festival, and though we can’t make it to Chicago this year (sob), here are our recommendations of four artists you can’t miss.

1) FKA twigs

www.intro.de

British singer-producer Tahliah Barnett, primarily referred to as FKA twigs (the FKA stands for “Formerly Known As”), creates lush soundscapes and ethereal vocals which recall 90s trip-hop idols. LP1 is her first full-length album and will be released in August 2014. Her EP2, released last fall, has generated a ton of acclaim. She couldn’t be chosen as Spotify’s spotlighted artist or nominated for the BBC’s Sound of 2014 prize otherwise.

2) St. Vincent

www.buffablog.com

From The Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens’ touring band, Annie Clark, better known as St. Vincent, blends jazz with indie rock and persuasive guitar riffs for ultra catchy vibes. As a multi-instrumentalist, her unorthodox musical style keeps things from getting dull. Her recent LP has gained universal praise and showcases her tuneful chops.

3) Grimes

massedmc.com

Canadian artist Claire Boucher is not only a producer, singer, and songwriter; the multi-talented Grimes is also a director, painter, and writer. It’s a wide array of influences that make their mark known in Grimes’ almost indefinable music. As Tastemakers Magazine has said, her music resembles an “alien love-child of Aphex Twin and ABBA.” We’re pretty sure that line has gotten you at least a little curious, right?

4) tUnE-yArDs

www.windishagency.com

You may have heard this Afro-pop project of Merrill Garbus, previously of indie project Sister Suvi. Tune-Yards’ songs have been heard in Orange Is the New Black, Weeds, and The Good Wife. Nikki Nack was released back in May to notable reviews. How does it sound? Think of off-the-cuff field recordings, super rad beats, and looped brass horns with catchy refrains.

Toast Of The Town: Summer Drinks! And The Clothes To Pair With Them

Summer has gotten off to a sweltering start, and not a day goes by here in sunny (or should we say scorching?) LA without our wishing for something cold and satisfying to quench our seemingly insatiable thirst. So that got us thinking. We should do a post on summer drinks! And maybe what to pair with them? But there’s definitely an art to food and drink pairings, and unfortunately sommelier school is still on our list of things to do someday. Clothes, however, are a different story. Clothes we can do, and clothes we can do today. So we’ve collected some colorful, fruity, and most importantly refreshing drinks that are both easy to make for your summer beverage palate and easy to match to your summer outfit palette. With drink in hand and ensemble in check, this summer you’re sure to be the toast of the town.

Bluetini

1. Come To A Halter Plunging Minidress, 2. Cold Shoulder N Slit Bodycon Dress, 3. Plunging Single-Slit Maxi Dress, 4. I Love Lacy Peplum Sleeve Midi Dress

Bluetini – You’ll look every bit the Bond girl with a martini glass in your hand as long as you pair it with a sleek, sexy, seductive dress. How else will you get James to hand over the keys to the Aston Martin? We’re talking plunging halters, strategic cut-outs, sheer lace, high slits, and open backs. Just make him the Bluetini, and he’ll be all yours. Probably willing to trade Martin for martini. That’s fair, right? Right.

Watermelon Coconut Cooler

1. Crossing Paths Skater Dress, 2. Super Fine Knit Duster Cardigan, 3. Ace Of Basics Flared Tee, 4. Laced Is More Drawstring Shorts

Watermelon Coconut Cooler – Nothing says summer like picnicking, and nothing says picnic like watermelon. But you’re definitely not gonna wanna traipse through that beach / park / block party in a constricting cocktail dress or some cover-all jeans. It’s all about easy and breezy, like a slinky little skater dress, an open-knit kimono, a pair of pretty-much-pajamas shorts, or a loose top knotted on one side.

Cherry Cooler

1. Harem Pants, 2. High-Waisted Distressed Jeans, 3. Slick Plunge Romper, 4. Split Second Petal Harem Pants

Cherry Cooler – Say you’ve got a little bit of a dark side. And a lotta bit of a personality. You’re not gonna go out in cheery brights just because it’s summer. You will, however, swap the cheery for the cherry. Like this cooler, you’re more sweet-tart than sweet-heart. Only some non-conventional bottoms, like harems and distressed skinnies or a slick skin-tight romper, can give you that acidic edge you’re looking for.

Peach-Ginger Iced Tea

1. Textured Colorblock Bandage Dress, 2. Textured Panel Skater Dress, 3. Whats The Scoop Dress, 4. Mesh You Up Midi Skirt

Peach-Ginger Iced Tea – Peaches are sweet, sure, but like you and these looks, this drink is so much more. Match the exotic flavor of the ginger and the sophistication of the English tea with some subtly less-sweet details, like a low scoop back, a square rear cut-out, a cool colorblocking, or a minimal mesh inset. You’ll discover new elements of yourself and your wardrobe. Luckily, there’s still a whole lotta summer left to explore.

Style Crush: Eva Chen

In an industry where everyone is striving to stand out, Eva Chen is unique and notable. Not only for her razor-sharp sense of style, but also for her intellect and humor. Last June, Chen was appointed Editor-In-Chief of Lucky magazine by Anna Wintour (yes, the one and only). Many say she’s the editor of our generation. Why? She constantly has an ongoing dialogue with her Twitter and Instagram followers and is totally on top of current pop culture. Plus, she’s a total nerd! Chen’s career trajectory changed drastically from being a pre-med student at Johns Hopkins University to a Harper’s Bazaar intern, and we couldn’t be more grateful. By the end of a seven-year stint at Teen Vogue she had worked her way up to being the Health and Beauty Director, which positioned her perfectly for Lucky.

We admire her practicality, work ethic, and style smarts. Check out our Eva Chen gallery along with our GoJane picks for some serious inspo.

Seeing Is Believing: Optical Illusion Dresses (Plus Tips For Dressing Slimmer)

Celebrity Collage

Don’t have an hourglass figure? Don’t worry. You can get one. Already have an hourglass figure? Don’t worry. You can make it even better. Enter the optical illusion dress. We’re not talking an optical illusion like Magic Eye (remember those books?) or an M.C. Escher print that makes you a little dizzy if you stare at it too long. No, today we’re focusing on the dresses that use cool colorblocking, strategic seaming, and anything sartorially similar to seemingly suck you in, smooth you out, and sex you up, giving you those dangerous curves that caution signs like to warn us about, slimming your silhouette from your basic to your absolute most bangin’. For your consideration, we’ve rounded up the different types of optical illusion dresses in our collection, as well as a few tips for shedding those visual pounds. You know how they say that seeing is believing? Prepare to be amazed, because the magic starts here…

Point Well Taken

1. Highlight Me Colorblock Bodycon Dress, 2. What’s Your Angle Colorblock Dress, 3. Geo Angles Mesh Inset Dress, 4. Double Up On Diamonds Cut-Out Dress

Point Well Taken – A waist is a terrible thing to waste, so anything that draws attention to it we wanna use to our advantage. Dresses with diagonal lines and sharp angles that point at the waist, which is the smallest part of your body, will create that shapely look you want, even though there are no curved lines actually on the garments.

Mirror, Mirror

1. Spot N Scroll Leopard Filigree Dress, 2. Check It Out Floral Mixed Print Dress, 3. Watercolor Wonder Bodycon Dress, 4. My Little Peony Floral Print Dress

Mirror, Mirror – Who’s the fairest of them all? It depends. Are you wearing a mirrored print? Most mirrored prints put most of the action on the sides of the dress, which gives the illusion of a narrower body by creating a slimmer center panel down the front and back.

Colorblock It Out1. Hourglass Colorblock Bodycon Dress, 2. 2 Become 1 Colorblock Cut-Out Dress, 3. Lets Mesh Around Pleated Dress, 4. Geo Colorblock Bodycon Dress

Colorblock It Out – If you’re a new kid on the colorblock, you should know that it’s more than just a regular ol’ fashion fad. It can also do wonders for your figure (especially when the contrast is in black, which we all know is slimming) by shaving down areas on your clothing and creating flattering curves and angles.

Top Of The Hourglass

1. Hourglass Geo Print Bodycon Dress, 2. Hourglass Figure Mermaid Maxi, 3. Hourglass Figure Midi Dress, 4. Petal Panels Floral Bodycon Dress

Top Of The Hourglass – We told you you could get an hourglass figure, and we meant it, even if you were born with more of a sheet glass figure. The hourglass dress is definitely tops in optical illusion dresses for its curve-creating capabilities, and nowadays you’ll find them in various lengths, materials, prints, etc. But for maximum impact, choose a dress with sides that match your skintone. The illusion will be all the more incredible.

Front And Center

1. Front And Center V-Neck Bodycon Dress, 2. Streak Of Genius Art Deco Print Dress, 3. Two-Way Streak Zipper Moto Dress, 4. Neon Top Of Your Game Bodycon Dress

Front And Center – The vertical line is your best friend when it comes to looking long and lean, because anything that draws the eye up and down the body will also help lengthen it. Vertical seams, stripes, zippers, and the like not only encourage the viewer to, well, look you up and down, but when they’re front and center they also split up your body into smaller, slimmer pieces.

Sheer And There

1. Sheer 4 U Mesh Bodycon Dress, 2. Lace To Lace Contrast Bodycon Dress, 3. Mesh Contrast Bodycon Dress, 4. Heart Act To Follow Striped Mesh Dress

Sheer And There – If you’re a fan of lace and mesh and all things sexy, see-through, and scintillating, go ahead and opt for a sheer version. The same silhouettes are still there. You’re already revving up the sex appeal with an optical illusion dress. You might as well take those curves all the way home.

More Optical Illusion Tips For Dressing Slimmer. . .

1. Buy clothes that actually fit! Too tight and you’re a lumpy pillow. Too loose and you’re a beanbag chair. You wanna be that sleek, smooth leather sofa. And don’t be afraid to get yourself upholstered. Er, tailored.

2. Use color to your advantage! Wearing the same color (or shades of the same color) from head to toe elongates you because you’re one continuous line of color. But if you’re going for a multi-colored look, just don a dark color over any areas that you want outta the limelight.

3. Find a silhouette that suits you! An empire waist proudly displays your girls while discreetly hiding any midsection bulge. A high-waisted pant not only creates a longer lower body (read: leggy!), but it can also hold shit in like no other. You just gotta figure out what works for you.

4. Keep an eye on proportion! Balance is key. If you’re more pear-shaped, broaden your upper body with a wide-shouldered top. If you’re more bust than butt, forgo the ruffled top for a peplum skirt instead. And accessorize for where you want the eye to go. A long necklace, for example, would create that vertical line we were talking about earlier. And finally…

5. Don’t forget the extras! Forget diamonds. Shapewear is a girl’s best friend. So is a wide belt. While any belt can cinch you in and define your waist, a wide belt actually lengthens you by streamlining even more surface area. And heels will give you better posture and of course height (you look thinner when you look taller), but a pair that matches your coloring will give you legs for days. You won’t believe the illusion.

Tuesday Tunes: 5 Up-And-Coming Female Rappers

We’re pretty sure you’re familiar with a lot of lady rappers, but what about some new and upcoming faces? Music is an integral part of our work environment (yay!), and spinning catchy tunes is our jam. Check out these super raw and talented female rappers.

1) Angel Haze

She is twenty-two, has collaborated with Macklemore and Ludacris, and is currently dating Ireland Baldwin. Yes, that Baldwin, but don’t let it distract you from her super sharp lyrics, crunchy beats, and catchy hooks.

2) Dominique Young Unique

Also known as Dominique Lashawn Clark, she’s a runway model (we totally Googled pics – super hawt) who recently got signed to Sony Records. From the projects to recording artist… We’d say that’s a pretty sweet deal.

3) Awkwafina

For the curious, her real name is Nora Lum, and she’s known for her satirical and comical lyrics. You gotta love a chick who is down with her own goofiness. Watch her music video, and you’ll see exactly what we’re talking about. #adorable

4) Jean Grae

South African born Grae was formerly known as What? What? and now operates out of New York. We love her sophisticated rhymes and clever storytelling lyrics. Her Gotham Down trilogy is fantastic, and we urge you to check out her hysterical web series “Life With Jeannie.”

No Assembly Required: Two-Piece Looks From One-Piece Wonders

Optical illusion fashion is all the rage right now, what with the likes of Keira Knightley, Blake Lively, and Rihanna donning waist-whittling dresses to stunned (and sometimes outraged!) crowds at recent red carpet events. But today we’d like to focus on a different kind of illusion: the two-piece look you get from one of those extra nifty one-piece garments. That’s right, we’re seeing more and more dresses, rompers, and jumpsuits opting for the air of separates, even though they’re single items. And why not? Separates (suitably matched ones, of course) give you that extra put-together presence, like you spent time in front of the mirror / closet / mirrored closet putting effort into actually arranging your ensemble. Well, now you can achieve that I-thought-about-this-look look with an I’m-just-gonna-put-on-this-one one-piece. No assembly required. Check out our selection below, and maybe in the future, making it to work/school/dates on time will no longer be just an illusion…

Colorblock Party

1. Wrapped Striped Midi Dress, 2. Double Up On Diamonds Cut-Out Dress, 3. Angled Racer Front Skater Dress, 4. New Kid On The Colorblock Maxi Dress, 5. Colorblock My World Bodycon Dress, 6. Triple Threat Body Con Dress

1. 2-In-1 Open Back Dress, 2. One-Two Punch Striped Cut-Out Dress, 3. Sneak Peek Bodycon Dress, 4. Different Brushstrokes Bodycon Dress, 5. Rosy Bouquet Crisscrossed Dress, 6. Cross Your Heart Cut-Out Bodycon Dress

Tiers Of Joy

Style & Swag: Skater Girls

skater

In case you haven’t visited, here’s a friendly FYI: Southern California summers are hot, obvi. The sun shines relentlessly with long days and short nights which means we’re out cruising on a daily basis. Basically, it’s the prime season for street surfing seshes. We love it, skinned body parts included, because there’s nothing like feeling the wind through your hair, right? Yes, skateboarding is still dominated by the dudes, but we wanted to celebrate all of the ladies who skate. (Tomboys FTW.) Especially the pioneers like Vicki Vickers, Patti McGee, Ellen O’Neal, Robin Logan, Judi Oyama, and Cindy Whitehead. Plus, how badass is it to see Katharine Hepburn, Farrah Fawcett, and Jodie Foster in all of their vintage glory cruising on boards? Check out our gallery of super rad skating ladies.

All image credits in photo captions.

So, whether or not you hop on a board, it’s undeniable that skate culture has heavily influenced fashion. Our favorite cut-offs, slip-on sneakers, and perfectly worn tees and tanks are reliable standbys. We’ve included our much-loved GoJane picks below, and if you’re in the mood for a cruise… Well, hit us up!

Happy World Sauntering Day: Celebrate With The Cutest Walking Shoes Ever!

GoJane Lookbook

So what exactly is World Sauntering Day? Today celebrates the slow motion beauty of life. It reminds us to just take a chill pill, calm the F down, and enjoy the simpler things in life…like taking a nice stroll along the beach. See our beautiful model sauntering along the  moonlit beach? Doesn’t that look like something you’d be really good at? But you’re asking, “GoJane, how on earth does one saunter? Is that like when you’ve been sitting in a sauna longer than the recommended 20 minutes and you come staggering out like a wounded grizzly bear?” Ummmm…not quite. To saunter means to “walk in a slow, relaxed manner, without hurry or effort…” And that’s exactly what we want you to do today. So take off those heels (albeit super gorgeous), slip on some comfy (yet super chic and trendy) flats, and follow us to Chill Ville.

Chill Ville, where teddy bears and wildflowers dance to mushroom jazz and houses are made out of cotton candy and dreams…

Wear Your Polka Face: Do’s And Don’ts Of Donning Dots

Summer is only mere hours away (or three days if you’re being all accurate about it), and even though most of us working folk don’t get a real break like the schoolkids do, there’s still a sense of lightheartedness in the air, the kind you feel when you walk barefoot on the grass at the park or enjoy a frozen treat that drips all down your arm. It’s a sunny, distinctly summery state of mind, an attitude that affords us the freedom to frolic around in fun, flirty pieces that may be deemed a little too fanciful for fall or winter, specifically ones with cheerful prints, and very specifically, those featuring the classic but playful polka dot.

Unless you’re wearing circus-print adult-onesie pajamas, it’s hard to find a pattern with more whimsy than the polka dot. But at the same time, these little circles can be put together an infinite number of ways. While they may never lose their whimsy (who would want that!) they’re also easily balanced out by cut, color, and more. Just take a look at the celebrity collage below, and you’ll find that polka dots are actually extremely versatile, scattered over glamorous movie premiere gowns, sprinkled onto errand day shirt dresses, speckling one-piece wonder jumpsuits, even studding spiffy little retro gloves. (Can you spot ’em?)

Collage

Dippin’ into dots has never looked more delicious, right? So now that you’re totally inspired to, uh, hit the spot, here are a few little tips to help you connect the dots between you and your very own spotted style…

Do’s and Don’ts of Donning Dots

DO consider scale. As with any other print, scale is uber-important. The smaller the dot, the smaller the impact. If you go too-too big, you risk looking silly. AKA like you belong in the circus. And if you’re looking not to call attention to a certain body part, it’s probably a good idea to avoid covering it in humongous balls. Which are only like the least inconspicuous things ever.

DON’T pigeonhole yourself. Polka dots may be playful and cute, but that doesn’t mean they have to be cute-sy. Pair them with a sexy or sophisticated silhouette (perhaps an off-shoulder bodycon or sheer collared blouse?) or a more contemporary creation (a cut-out dress or structured cropped top, maybe?) to take them from childlike to ca-lassic.

Cropped Tops

Do The Polka Dotted Cropped Top, Spotted In Dots Cropped Top, Dot The I Bustier Top

DO play with color. Unless you want to look like a clown (here’s that circus thing again) or a ball pit at Chuck E. Cheese, you probably want to stay away from rainbow-colored polka dots. Of course that doesn’t mean you should avoid color altogether. There are other color combos besides black/navy and white, you know! But if you’re sold on that pairing, don’t be afraid to add a pop of color elsewhere with a shiny belt, a pretty scarf, or even a bright lip!

DON’T forget to accessorize. If you’re afraid to jump into this polka dot thing with both feet, maybe just start with something small…like the shoes on your feet! Or your collar, your watch, your hair, even your phone case. Polka dots are seriously everywhere, so if, for whatever reason, you’re only looking to dab on a little dose of it, don’t worry. You’ve got plenty of options.

Untitled-3

Do The Polka Canvas Sneakers, Polka Dot Watch, Polka Dot Bunny Ear Hair Tie, Scattered Polka Dot Boyfriend Watch, Dot The Eyes Espadrille Skimmer Flats

DO think about silhouette. Polka dots can definitely have a retro feel. Think fifties pin-up in a red lip and polka dot halter. Or fifties housewife in a red lip and polka dot apron. Keep your polka dots from bordering on vintage by choosing modern pieces with clean lines and sleek silhouettes. Or if you’re feelin’ the retro vibe, use the spotted piece to your advantage. For example, the polka dots on this high-waisted bikini set take it from cute to over-the-top (in a good way!) adorable…

Untitled-1

High-Waisted Polka Dot Tankini Set

DON’T be afraid to mix prints. We said it before, and we’ll say it again. Prints, like people, should not be subjected to segregation! Polka dots are super classic, so they’ll totally play well with others. If you consider yourself a beginner with patterns, try pairing a two-toned polka dot with the same two tones in a stripe. Once you get the hang of it, throw in more colors and patterns and have yourself a print parade.

Tuesday Tunes: Lana Del Rey

Oh, how things have changed. Remember when Lana made her debut performance on SNL and the swift, raw backlash that immediately followed? Ultraviolence is proof that LDR has refined her voice and writing skills to craft a new, albeit dark, presence. (She recently commented, “I wish I was already dead,” in an interview with The Guardian. Um, damn.) However, Del Rey is anything but uncontrolled on her newest album which has the skillful touch of The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, who produced most of Ultraviolence. We slide into 1970s California with luxuriant layers of sound which remind us of what LDR is best at: being vintage but new, glamorous but tender, dark but hopeful. (Well, maybe? We need more time with the newly released album.) Whatever the case may be, it’s obvious that Lana has developed her own signature sound and look. Take a peep at Del Rey’s style in the gallery below and take a listen to her newest singles…

Countdown To Summer: 10-Day Boot Camp!

There’s only ten days left until the first official day of summer! We’ve got a bunch of must-do’s that will get you ready for the best summer of your life! Who’s up for the challenge?

Day 10

Recycle a pair of old jeans into your soon-to-be fave summer shorts…

It’s super easy. Just cut a pair of jeans at the desired length and throw them in the washing machine. The tumble will give the freshly cut hems all the fray they need to keep you too cool for school. Try them on every day and make sure you’re lunging and calf-raising your way into the perfect fit. And if you’re too lazy (or just #aintgotnotimeforthat), get a pair of denim cut-offs from GoJane.com.

Day 9

Give yourself a fruity facial in preparation for a summer without makeup…

Seriously, with all of the sweaty mischief and random outdoor chaos, you’re better off going the summer without makeup. To ensure you’ve got the best plain canvas possible, give yourself an easy DIY fruity facial scrub. Different fruits have different benefits, so make sure your fruity cocktail is right for your skin tone. Like did you know fresh lemon juice can help with oily skin? Amaze!

Day 8

Stock up on some summer reading essentials…

Summertime is all about straight lounging! And what better way to lounge than with some inspiring, entertaining, or life-changing wordplay? We suggest keeping the reading light, like revisiting an old classic from your childhood. Island of the Blue Dolphins, anyone? Or if you’re really down for the cause, just visit blog.gojane.com for a daily dose of stylish entertainment.

Day 7

Learn how to build a scientifically kickass sandcastle…

Sure, tossing some sand around can be fun (and also a great way to exfoliate), but some people take this grainy group project to a whole new level. Dude, how rad would it be to enter and WIN a sand castle building contest? Do it, dude. Do it.

Day 6

Become a fruit infused water drinking mofo…

The best thing to happen to water since ice cubes…fruit. We have been slicing and dicing all types of fruit and putting it into our water. We’re not talking the usual lemon wedges. Oh, no! We’re talking cucumbers, oranges, ginger, and mint. And the added bonus? A lot of these fruity concoctions have health benefits. Like did you know mint-infused water helps with digestion?

Tip: Keep your infused water cold. A warm or hot water bottle full of fruit can be a breeding ground for mold and bacteria.

Day 5

Whip that hair into shape…

Don’t skip the weekly deep-conditioning hair masks. Your hair deserves to spend this summer flowing and shining in the sun like the queen it is.

Day 4

Get your car ready…

You are going to need a sweet G-ride to get you around this summer. And no one wants to sit shotgun in a car that smells like horrible life decisions and feet. It’s time to soap up them sponges and scrub your car into a wicked ass summer.

Day 3

Update your playlist with some sunny jams…

Every great summer has a great soundtrack. Make sure yours is full of beats, bass, and Beyonce. Everyone needs a little (or a lot) of Beyonce!

Day 2

Give yourself a tropical mani/pedi…

The best way to remind yourself that it’s summer time and you’re here to have fun (dammit) is to have a constant reminder at your fingertips. And if you don’t have any tropical vacations planned this summer, you can always just gaze down at your pretty nails and day dreeeeeeeeeam.

Day 1

Walk. Run. Bike. Drive. To. Da. Beach.

Olá, 2014 World Cup!

Every four years the FIFA World Cup takes place as one of the biggest sporting events of the year. It’s hosted this year by Brazil, and thirty-two nations are taking part (USA! USA! USA!). Whether you’re a fan of the “beautiful game” or not, the fact is soccer/football is about to get very, very popular for the next month. Want to impress your friends? Here are ten facts about the World Cup, past and present.

  1. Despite the fact that India qualified for the 1950 World Cup, they refused to play because the rules required shoes. Because of financial concerns, Indian players were accustomed to barefoot football.
  2. Who could forget the 2006 headbutt from Zinedine Zidane? Click this video if you need a refresher.
  3. Brazil 2014 welcomes a new team: Bosnia-Herzegovina.
  4. Scotland has qualified 8 times and has also been eliminated in the first round all 8 times. Better luck next time!
  5. Let’s crunch some numbers. The 2006 World Cup had an estimated 715.1 million viewers. In 2010 the World Cup was broadcast in over 200 countries. Over 3 million people attended the 2010 World Cup with an average of 50,000 attendees per match. Another 6 million gathered in public viewing locations in 16 places around the world. (It truly is a global sport.)
  6. Brazil has made the most consecutive World Cups with 19 appearances. How’s that for a host country?
  7. The record for the highest number of goals in a game was Austria vs. Switzerland in 1954. Austria defeated Switzerland 7-5.
  8. There are 208 FIFA nations, and 204 attempted to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
  9. The first goal in World Cup history was scored by Lucien Laurent of France in 1930.
  10. We can’t finish the list without mentioning Pelé. He is the only player to have won 3 World Cup championships. Guess what? He’s Brazilian.

Here is the FIFA World Cup schedule. To help us feel festive we’ve included our World Cup mood board.

The 2014 Tony Awards: The Bests Of The Best From Broadway’s Biggest Bash

Hollywood may be the destination darling for most major award shows, but the east coast gets the upper hand at least one glamorous night of the year that always has a decidedly New York state of mind. We are of course referring to the annual Tony Awards, a celebration that highlights the best and brightest of Broadway shows and their stars, which last night was held at the Radio City Music Hall and helmed by “Wolverine in tap shoes,” a Mr. Hugh Jackman. While most people may not be as familiar with plays and musicals as with movies and television (one colleague, who may or may not have been tied to a pole and flogged, actually uttered “They televise that?”), we here at GoJane are definitely fans and patrons of the theatre arts and would never let the Tonys slip by without giving them our unique brand of coverage. So here’s our take on the bests of the best from the 68th Annual Tony Awards…

Best Lap Dance: Neil Patrick Harris

Best Lap Dance -- Neil Patrick Harris

The legen-wait-for-it-dary NPH may not have reprised his now-usual role of Tony host (he’s won two Emmys for it), but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t onstage (as usual) and stealing the show (as usual). The actor was barely recognizable when he took the stage as a German transgender singer in a huge blond wig and tiny denim skirt. The gender-bending role from Hedwig And The Angry Inch would win him his first Tony, but we’re pretty sure the most memorable Neil Patrick Harris moment of the night came when he took off Samuel L. Jackson’s glasses and licked them before putting them back on his face. And SLJ wasn’t the only one to reap the benefits of sitting up close. Sting and Kevin Bacon both got a lap full of Neil, and he didn’t forget to lay a big one on husband David Burtka before finishing his set.

Best Newbie Who Is Really An Oldie But Goodie: Bryan Cranston

Best Newbie Who Is Really An Oldie But Goodie -- Bryan Cranston

Since his run in the critically acclaimed AMC series Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston has cemented his status as one of the most versatile actors of our generation (Malcolm In The Middle, anyone?), spanning television, film, and now stage. Last night he won a Tony Award for his Broadway debut as President Lyndon Johnson in the play All The Way, in which he wore prosthetic ears and transformed into a completely recognizable version of the historical figure. The trophy will sit on his mantle with the countless accolades he earned as Walter White, a role with which he will always have ties. Speaking of live theatre, he remarked, “When you can effect emotional change in the audience it’s like a powerful drug. It’s as strong as blue crystal meth.”

Best Beautiful Moment Ugly Cry: Audra McDonald

Audra

If Lupita N’yongo was the princess of this year’s Oscars, Audra McDonald was the queen of this year’s Tonys. The Broadway diva (in the best sense of the word; you should hear her opera voice!) picked up her sixth Tony for her role as Billie Holiday, breaking a three-way tie she held with theatre greats Angela Lansbury and Julie Harris and making her the first person to win Tonys in four different acting categories. She reigned with one of the most touching acceptance speeches of the night. “I’m standing on Lena Horne, I’m standing on Maya Angelou, Diahann Carroll, Ruby Dee, and most of all Billie Holiday. You deserved so much more than you were given when you were on this planet. This is for you, Billie.”

Best Bespectacled Bros: Matt Bomer and Zachary Quinto

Best Bespectacled Bros -- Matt Bomer and Zachary Quinto (LA Times)

This photo is pretty self-explanatory. It’s really just here so we can stare at it. But speaking of twinsies…

Best Unintentional Twinsies Moment: Kevin Bacon and Ethan Hawke

Best Unintentional Twinsies Moment (NY Daily News)

We know Kevin Bacon gets around (you’ve played The Six Degrees Of Kevin Bacon, right?), but we didn’t think his influence could be this potent. ‘Cause is it just us, or is Ethan Hawke slowly but surely morphing into Kevin Bacon? If one of them hadn’t worn that spectacular grey suit, we may have had a hard time figuring out who was who was who. And in case you’re wondering, Ethan Hawke was in Hamlet with Bill Murray who was in Wild Things with Kevin Bacon. Boom.

Best Red Carpet Color Mantra: Orange Is The New Black

Orange

We saw quite a few dark dresses on the Tonys red carpet, but orange definitely emerged as an it color last night. We’re imagining these stars’ stylists all making the same joke: “Orange you glad we went with orange?”😀

Best LOL Moment: Jonathan Groff

la-et-cm-tony-awards-2014-show-highlights-phot-001 latimes

Only a few months ago, at the Academy Awards, John Travolta single-handedly turned Adele Dazeem into a household name. It was just too bad that she, like the alter-ego of a con artist on Catfish: The TV Show, never existed. Except maybe in his mind. Frozen star Idina Menzel may have laughed it off, but we’re sure RENT-heads and Wicked fangirls alike were waiting for some sort of misnomer redemption. Well, last night they got it, by way of the wick-edly talented (and adooooorable) Jonathan Groff, whose spot-on impression of John Travolta’s gaffe managed to be funny but good-spirited at the same time.

Best Fakeout: Hugh Jackman and Neil Patrick Harris

d

Did anyone else get abnormally excited thinking that a Beyonce / Solange / Jay-Z spoof was imminent when Hugh stepped into an elevator with Neil and we were treated to the black and white security camera footage? Alas, it was only wishful thinking on our parts.

Best Post-Show Plans: James Monroe Iglehart

Bpp-d7pIYAAr-vz twitter

While most award show attendees may find it most appealing to cap off the night with fancy drinks and tiny hor d’oeuvres, the larger-than-life winner of Best Featured Actor In A Musical had slightly different plans. James Monroe Iglehart, who dreamed of playing the Genie in Aladdin after seeing Robin Williams’ rousing rendition of Friend Like Me in the Disney movie, won his first Tony last night with his wife at his side. Their post-show plans in their black-tie attire? A late-night run to McDonald’s! “We do it after very important occasions. It keeps us humble. It keeps us grounded. We get a Big Mac and fries and we go back to the house and we kick it with our cats, and this lets us know that this is still real life.”

How To Be The Bombshell Dot Com: Lessons From Marilyn

This past Sunday marked the eighty-eighth birthday of one Norma Jeane Baker, better known to the world as Miss Marilyn Monroe. Some fifty years after her passing, Marilyn Monroe is still a style icon today, her infamous dresses selling for millions, her likeness and words the subject of Pin-worthy E-cards everywhere. She was arguably the blondest and bombest of all the blonde bombshells throughout Hollywood’s glittering history, so who better to teach us how to be a bombshell than Marilyn herself, right? We’ve highlighted some of her most iconic fashion pieces, which along with some of her best quotes will hopefully teach us a thing or two on becoming nothing less than the-bombshell-dot-com…

The Plunging Neckline

Taking The Plunge Halter JumpsuitGood In The Hood Chambray JumpsuitPlunging Single-Slit Maxi Dress

The Plunging Neckline“I love to do things the censors won’t pass.” To really be a bombshell, you’ll need to dare to bare, and one of the best ways is with a plunging neckline. So don’t be afraid to, well, take the plunge.

The Pencil Skirt

Stripe A Match Midi Pencil Skirt, X Factor Surplice Back Pencil SkirtPhoto Finish Textured Pencil Skirt

The Pencil Skirt — “I defy gravity.” There’s no avoiding the curves if you’re trying to be a bodacious babe, and wiggling into a hip-hugging skirt will keep everything up and in but out of this world.

The Lucite Heel

Metallic Glass Slipper WedgesIn The Clear Chain Link Wedges, Clearly Velvet Lucite HeelsI Love Lucite Platform Pumps

The Lucite Heel — “Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.” You can’t really get more glam than the platform heel. That is, unless you add luxe, luscious lucite. Marilyn would tell you, it’s okay to be a little transparent.

The High-Waisted Short

High-Waisted Faux Leather ShortsZip It Denim ShortsOff The Cuff High-Waisted Shorts

The High-Waisted Short — “The body is meant to be seen, not all covered up.” Long before The Neighbourhood proclaimed their affinity for “those little high-waisted shorts” in Sweater Weather, Marilyn was already a fan. And what’s not to like? Everything is held in, and nothing gets you looking leggier…

The Off-Shoulder

Bow Off-The-Shoulder Bodycon DressStrips Search Off-Shoulder DressBasic Instincts Off-Shoulder Dress

The Off-Shoulder — “One of the best things that ever happened to me is that I’m a woman.” If you share Marilyn’s sentiment for womanhood, why not bare a woman’s best feature? We’re of course talking the shoulders. Buuuuut if you want to show off, er, a little more in your off-shoulder top, we won’t stop you.

The Dark Turtleneck

Turtleneck Crop TopSingle Lady Mockneck Romper

The Dark Turtleneck — “We are all of us stars, and we deserve to twinkle.” Marilyn also famously said “Your clothes should be tight enough to show you’re a woman but loose enough to show you’re a lady.” The turtleneck is the perfect balance between demure (the coverage) and dangerous (the curves), and on that dark canvas, your moneymaker (your face, duh!) will simply shine.

Let’s not stop now! Here are some lesser-known facts about Miss Monroe that we can all use as life lessons:

1. When she found out that jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald could not perform at the historic Mocambo nightclub in Hollywood because of segregation, Marilyn promised to sit front row in exchange for Fitzgerald’s booking, knowing her presence would garner press and publicity for the facility. Lesson learned? Be good to others, and don’t be afraid to take a stand!

2. Hollywood’s most famous blonde actually started out with reddish brown hair, and she would later begin to shave off half an inch from one heel to give herself that trademark wiggle. Lesson learned? Do what is right for you and your body!

3. Marilyn was very diligent about her skincare, washing her face fifteen times a day and applying a hormone cream to it that caused a layer of blonde down to form over her face. Instead of shaving that peach fuzz, she chose to use it to her advantage, and from then on she never needed special lenses to get that soft glow on camera. Lesson learned? Embrace your unique attributes!

4. In her childhood and adolescence, Marilyn had a stutter. She would eventually overcome it with the help of a therapist who told her to speak with a breathy tone, which would eventually become one of her trademarks. Lesson learned? Overcome hardships and become better for it!

5. She may have sung “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, but Marilyn had mostly costume jewelry and loved having fun and making statements with her accessories. Lesson learned? Money does not buy style, and the important thing is to have fun with what you wear!

How To: Summer Blacks

When we think of summer, we think of cool, light colors. It’s definitely a dilemma for the gals that prefer wearing black (guilty as charged). If you favor fall and winter, do not despair. Screw the old school fashion “rules”; trust us when we say that you won’t look like Darth Vader. We’ve included some top tips for wearing all black ensembles while still beating the heat. Get inspired with the looks in the gallery below.

All image credits in photo captions.

Top Tips

  • Yah, it’s a no brainer, but keep the fabrics light. This is not the time for wool unless it’s suddenly chilly.
  • Accessorize with bags and jewelry in natural textures such as raffia, wood, and leather.
  • Accessorize with bold jewelry that feels seasonally appropriate.
  • For graphic contrast, add some white. Black and white is always a classic. Umm, have you seen photos of Coco Chanel?
  • Vary the fabrics and textures. We don’t need an all black cotton uniform.
  • Your outfit can change with the addition of a lip color. Feeling classic? Go for a bold red lip. Need a lighter daytime feel? Try a natural lip stain instead.

We’ve got our GoJane faves below. How do you wear black in the summer?

Battle Florale: Floral Alternatives For The Non-Girly Girl

While flowers may not all be perennial, floral print sure seems to be, and we here at GoJane wouldn’t have it any other way. We love floral print, and the girly girl in us isn’t afraid to admit it. But this year’s April showers seem to have brought in more than just May flowers. We’re not only seeing precious pastel posies but also buds and blooms that are dark and rich, bold and edgy, tough and sexy. Still ready to add a boost of femme and freshness but totally emphasizing the power in flower power.

We’ve compiled some of our favorites below – floral alternatives for the non-girly girl. (You girly girls will find them perfect for your off-days too!) Even if you’ve never been a fan of florals before, we’re hoping they and you will get a fresh start here today. We know, we know. You don’t have the rosiest of dispositions. Don’t worry, there’s totally a flower arrangement out there to match your individual personality. So don’t fight it. We still have a month left of spring. It’s about time you came into bloom.

Keep Palm And Carry On

Keep Palm And Carry On – Like we said before, we love flowers and all, but we think it’s about time for foliage to be front and center too. Or should we say frond and center? For the upcoming summer we’re feeling easy and breezy and totally…palm. Flowers are too girly, you say? Opt for palm fronds instead and get all the freshness without any of the femininity. They’re edgy (literally), and the jagged little leaves provide as much visual interest as an abstract painting. Not to mention they totally evoke images of you with your toes in the sand and a coconut in your hand.

Tropical Thunder

Tropical Thunder – And speaking of vacationing in an exotic locale, tropical florals are another great way to turn down the G-I-R-L while turning up the R and R. Even if you’re months from a getaway and nowhere near an island retreat, you can keep the tropical vibe close with a print that depicts all the lush vegetation of your favorite hot spot. And yes, the flowers are still there, but these are not your ordinary, girly, garden-variety flowers (pun definitely intended). No, these blooms are bright and bold and badass. Not unlike you, right?

Mix Of The Trade

Mix Of The Trade – Also pretty badass? Mixed prints. There’s nothing like a good mixed print that says “In fashion, there’s only one rule, and that rule is…there ARE no rules!” It’s that devil-may-care sartorial attitude that pairs plain florals with other prints and patterns, instantly taking them from simple to stunning. Place your flowers atop a great graphic, geometric background (stripes, checkers, harlequin diamonds, etc.) or a wild wildlife print, and they are transformed and given a whole new dimension. Femme? No way. Fun? Absolutely.

Dark-Grounded For Life

Dark-Grounded For Life – And finally, one of the best ways to go sultry instead of sweet with your flowers is to – drumroll, please – choose a dark-grounded floral. Even if your print is something as dainty and delightful as daisies, putting it on a dark background immediately takes it, well, to the dark side. A black backdrop can balance out the floweriest of flowers, giving them the extra edge and sophistication that we know a non-girly girl like you would surely appreciate. So what’s your favorite way to put the power in flower power? We wanna know! Tell us below…

We looooove spaghetti… Straps, that is. Fooled you, huh? As much as we’d love to drop everything and go eat (#FOMO on grub), we need to get to the meat (ha) of the post which is all about our love for 90s inspired cami/spaghetti strap dresses.

When it’s hot out, what more does a girl need other than some thin straps to hold some thin cloth against a smokin’ bod? It’s all about rocking a super polished but casual look, and a cami dress is an easy option. Plus, a little 90s never hurt anyone. Sparkles? Check. Spaghetti straps over a shirt? Check. Cami dresses with lace-up boots and sneakers? Check. And since we’re speaking of the 90s, let’s take a trip down memory lane with this super rad gallery. We’ve included the classics and some n00bs for a dose of old and new. (We’re aware that Kate Moss dominates the gallery. What can we say? Girl knows how to dress.)

Summertime In The LBD: Little Black Dresses To Beat (And Turn Up) The Heat

Today, May 22nd, just happens to be World Goth Day, and to commemorate the occasion, we’re honoring our favorite color in the world (black, duh!) by putting the spotlight on a perennial wardrobe essential – the Little Black Dress. While the color black may enjoy a yearlong reign as a beloved neutral we can’t live without, wearing an LBD in these sunnier, nature-worshipping months may have you feeling like a glamorous attendee of a funeral being held at da club, especially if everyone else is out picnicking and frolicking about in loose, white linens.

Not to worry. One of the best things about the Little Black Dress is its variety, and we’ve rounded up a bevy of black beauties that will lighten the fashion mood (ironic, right?) and not only help you beat the heat but also turn it way, way up. Take a look at our collection below, and before long (summer officially begins on June 21st!) you too can be celebrating summertiiiiime in the LBD ♫

Meshing Accomplished

1. Cold Shoulder Mesh Contrast Dress, 2. Such A Mesh Bodycon Dress, 3. In The Mesh Zipper Bodycon Dress, 4. Not So Sweetheart Mesh Strap Dress, 5. Heart Act To Follow Striped Mesh Dress

If you love that paradox of being exposed but feeling covered up, then the mesh inset has to be your BFF (Best Fashion Feature). Mesh is ultimately see-through because of its holey quality, and those million little pores in it that afford you that transparency will also allow your skin to breathe through the summer heat. Super hot and super cool. Yeah, we’d call that a Meshing Accomplished.

Best Lace Scenario

1. Crochet Away Tie-Back Shift Dress, 2. I Love Lacy Peplum Sleeve Midi Dress, 3. Get Lacy Strappy Dress, 4. Ace The Lace Embroidered Midi Dress, 5. Lady In Lace Accent Dress, 6. Out In The Open Crochet Dress

You can achieve a similar situation with a swirly crochet or an intricate lace, which can appear a bit more delicate, demure, and decorative than mesh. Whether it’s a slim inset or a full-on back, a little lace can liven and lady up any black dress. For a girly girl or a luxe lassie it’s definitely the Best Lace Scenario.

Cut-Out For This

1. Rung Number Laddered Cut-Out Dress, 2. Cross Halter Cut-Out Midi Dress, 3. Millenium Cut-Out Dress, 4. Hole New World Cut-Out Dress, 5. Strappy Herringbone Halter Dress, 6. Don’t Shed A Teardrop Cut-Out Dress

Now if you like the being exposed part but also don’t mind the feeling exposed part, you’re totally Cut-Out For This type of Little Black Dress – the cut-out confection. There’s not much to say about this one. Cut-outs equal ventilation. Cut-outs also equal sexy sensation, which is exactly what you’ll be in one of these skin-baring smocks.

Leggy Streak

1. Knot Your Average Twisted Maxi Dress, 2. Hey Crochet Slit Maxi Dress, 3. Ruche Into Things Side Draped Dress, 4. Fluttery Draped Maxi Dress, 5. Basic Single Slit Maxi Dress

Speaking of skin-baring, normally we probably wouldn’t consider maxis when thinking about Little Black Dresses, but with the creative contouring on the ones above, we’ll allow it this time. So if you’ve always been a leg girl (or should we say, always been the object of affection for leg guys), we totally recommend continuing your Leggy Streak with one of these high-slit, high-impact LBDs.

Give The Cold Shoulder

1. Bow Off-The-Shoulder Bodycon Dress, 2. Keep It Simple Dress, 3. One Shoulder Openwork Trim Dress, 4. Sheer Thing Off-The-Shoulder Dress, 5. No Crossing Back Off-The-Shoulder Dress, 6. Single Lady One-Shoulder Mini Dress

But we’re guessing you have more than one good feature. Well, then. Give The Cold Shoulder to hot temperatures by showing off a woman’s best feature. Hint: They’re below your head but above your stomach, and there are two of them. No, not those! Your shoulders, silly! Cool off this summer with an off-the-shoulder or one-shoulder LBD. You carry a lot on your shoulders; like you, they should get a chance to come out and play too.

Cami Crush

1. Trace Of Lace Cami Dress, 2. Slip My Mind Strappy Cami Midi Dress, 3. Asymmetrical Ruched Cami Dress, 4. Slip Away Strappy Cami Maxi Dress, 5. Lace T-Back Dress

It can be hard to get the motivation to go out and play, though, when the sun is scorching. Or at least, it’s pretty tempting to just run out the door in your birthday suit even when it’s not your birthday. Unfortunately most of us live in places where public nudity is shamed frowned upon and probably promptly cited. What’s the next best thing to naked? Well, we’ve had a Cami Crush for a while now, and a light little slip dress would be the perfect easy, breezy LBD for summer.

Catch You Skater

1. Zip The Scales Mockneck Skater Dress, 2. Textured Panel Fit N Flare Dress, 3. Strap-Tastic Fit N Flare Dress, 4. Up High Down Low Skater Dress

And finally we have the skater dress. What better way to turn up the fun than with a flirty silhouette like that will instantly give your look some extra flare/flair? And that full skirt is exactly what you want to allow your legs (and your bum) that much-needed breathing room. In one of these dresses, they’ll have no problem feeling the breeze, and neither will you. We hope you’ve been inspired to update that LBD section of your closet. The Buckle: 8 Summer Sandals U Need!

One, two, buckle my shoe… Let’s talk about buckles, and not the ones that hitch up your boyfriend jeans. They’re functional, we like ’em big and small, and they elevate flat sandals without needing bling. And what with this fantastic weather, we’re all about exposing the toes with wild abandon. Plus, a girl can’t wear flip-flops all the time. Flat sandals are perfect because they’re more polished than flip-flops, but less maintenance than heels. We’ve rounded up a few inspirational photos of buckled sandals – everything from good old granola girl slides to gladiator styled silhouettes. To us, summer is all about keeping things uncomplicated. Simplify your routine and buckle up in our GoJane picks below.

Top Tips

  • Got some chunky buckles? Create a leg-lengthening silhouette. E.g. cut-offs with bare legs or skinny cigarette pants.
  • If you’re a shawty, go for a nude or neutral color to lengthen your leg line, and use a T-strap to your advantage. A dark color can cut you off at the ankles (refer to point one).
  • Add a pop of color to your toes. We’re partial to all white, “rorange” (red-orange), and pastels.
