Precious Stone: Style Crushin’ (And Girl Crushin’) On Emma Stone

Emma Stone is as rare as they come.

It’s been years since she shot to it-girl stardom as America’s new fave redhead, after making us wonder whether Jonah Hill’s Seth deserved such a cool girl in Superbad and then taking a turn as the fearless lead in Easy A, for which she earned a Golden Globe Best Actress nom. But the twenty-five-year-old Arizona native is still it, as smart, funny, and lovable as ever (maybe even more so now that she’s one-half of the cutest couple in the world), not to mention gorgeous, with a Revlon contract and what seems to be a never-ending parade of high-fashion hits.

She’s currently starring in what will inevitably become one of this year’s biggest blockbusters, the second installment of the Amazing Spider-Man series in which she plays blondie Gwen Stacy. With her ever-changing hair color (she’s a natural blonde by the way) we can no longer call her our favorite redhead, but we thought we’d pay tribute to her red “roots” with a collage of some of her best red carpet looks. (Disclaimer: Some of those carpets weren’t really red either.)

Emma Stone

More amazing than the Amazing what’s-his-name, right? It’s official. The girl can pull off anything, clothes or hair. And here are some more reasons why Emma Stone is made of awesome…

1. She’s computer-literate – At fourteen, Emma famously convinced her parents to let her pursue her dream by inviting them to her bedroom for a PowerPoint presentation entitled “Project Hollywood 2004.” Mom and Dad couldn’t say no to the movie popcorn and Madonna track in the background, and ten years later, we couldn’t be happier.

2. She’s literate-literate – Emma may have been home-schooled for much of her scholastic career, but that didn’t dampen her love of language. As she puts it, she’s “hardcore about grammar” and spelling too (she was a spelling bee kid), which is refreshing to hear when most of this generation is more concerned with how to shoot the perfect selfie.

EmmaAndrew2-Post

3. She does good deeds – Like the time she and boyfriend Andrew Garfield noticed lurking paparazzi and decided to use the media coverage to turn the spotlight on some worthy organizations. (In case you’re wondering, that’s the Worldwide Orphans Foundation and Gilda’s Club in New York, which provides free support to those living with cancer.)

4. She’s got a unique voice (literally) – We find Emma’s trademark raspiness pretty darn endearing, but she wasn’t born that way. Close, though. She had colic as a baby, which caused her to scream and cry and develop nodules that became calluses on her vocal cords. Even though this means that today she loses her voice more easily than the average person, those nodes also gave her her signature smoky sound.

5. She’s got a unique voice (not so literally) – Emma epitomizes girl power. She once answered a question about what kind of makeup guys like on girls with a nonchalant “I could care less.” But what she does care about is how women feel about themselves. And in response to girls’ growing issues with self esteem and body image, she said, “My great hope for us as young women is to start being kinder to ourselves so that we can be kinder to each other.” It’s hard not to give her a “You go, girl” for that.

EMMA-STONE-SPICE-GIRLS

6. She’s a fan of other women – So it comes as no surprise that Emma isn’t shy about expressing her admiration of other women and isn’t too proud to have those starstruck, geeking out moments that we so-called normal people might have getting to interact with someone we idolize or wishing we could be a certain starlet for one night. That’s her above freaking out during a FaceTime session with Mel C (her Spice Girls obsession is well-documented. She can forge each Girl’s signature!) and below working a dress a la Lupita Nyong’o.

emma-stone-lupita-nyongo-1     emma-stone-lupita-nyongo-2

7. She’s a “prude” – In an industry where young starlets are over-sexualized and it’s completely not shocking for one to hump a foam finger / pen a list of sexual conquests / leak a sex tape, Emma’s relative conservatism is a breath of fresh air, not to mention totally adorable. So it’s okay, Emma, that you have more Nevers than Haves or that lyrics from a Jamie Foxx song can be entirely too racy to comprehend. ‘Cause some of us are right there with you!

tumblr_n3xc4wo5mv1qf1b7uo3_250     tumblr_n3xc4wo5mv1qf1b7uo8_r1_250

8. But she’ll take you down – By now it should be pretty clear that Emma can hold her own against anyone at anything. This past weekend she stole the show during Andrew Garfield’s Saturday Night Live monologue. But a few days before that she not only beat Jimmy Fallon but anyone who has ever lip-synced anything since the beginning of time with the most epic (we hate that word, but it really was) un-mic-ed performance ever recorded. It’s got sixteen million views and counting; we’ll probably add a few more. ‘Cause if anyone deserves to be watched, it’s Emma Stone.

Nauti By Nature: Ways To Wear The Nautical Trend

Fashion is notorious for its ebb and flow. Like tides that turn, trends will come, but then they go. And though every once in a while, waves are made by this or that, one style seems to stay afloat, unsinkable above the rest of the pack. As resilient as a buoy bobbing amidst the violent seas. And as trusty as a glowing lighthouse on a dark and stormy night. As if to say “Ahoy, there! Yup, still here! And I’m not going anywhere.”

We’re of course talking about the nautical trend. (Please tell us you were able to figure that out. If not, maybe brush up on those similes and metaphors?) What began as a naval uniform in nineteenth-century France has evolved into the most classic of styles, a look that is decidedly all-American but not without some European sophistication, one that is simple yet elegant, clean but elevated, and though strong, still graceful.

Collage

Not only does nautical never go out of style, it’s also super easy to wear! You don’t actually have to go to sea to look like you belong on the deck of a yacht (and we don’t mean cleaning it). You can skip the motion sickness (dramamine, anyone?) and still feel like you’re being swept away on an ocean-bound vacay just like that. For your viewing pleasure, we’ve put together some nauti outfits using key pieces from our collection. So put on your proverbial life jacket and come set sail with us as we explore the nautical trend. We’ll have you in shipshape, solo at the helm, in no time at all.

Inspired? Here are some tips for creating your very own nauti outfits…

1. Stripe a nauti pose! Stripes, stripes, and more stripes. Not much more has to be said here. Because really, nothing says nautical like some red, white, or blue stripes. And speaking of color…

2. Color me bad nauti! Those nautical colors are so iconic that as long as you wear red, white, and blue together you’ll look like a nauti girl. Super easy, right?

3. Be a nautical print-cess! In addition to stripes, nautical prints like anchors, ropes, boats, fish, lighthouses, and even lobsters can make for a cute and slightly cheeky outfit. Just keep the rest of your look clean to highlight the pattern and pump up the sophistication.

4. All aboard! Likewise, anything having to do with sailing will evoke the nauti vibe. An anchor accessory would be an obvious choice, but you could also do a play on ropes. Anything knotted or braided like a cord necklace or twisted belt would do the trick. Also, pearls! Not only do they come from the sea, but their elegance matches the nautical style perfectly.

5. Role play! Think about occupations that go to sea and the elements of their everyday uniforms. Fisherman’s hats, sailor hats, knit beanies, wader pants, trench coats, rain boots… The list goes on and on. You can also take a page from the pinup era – red lips, big curls, high-waisted shorts – to add a little femininity to your seafaring look.

6. But don’t go overboard! When there’s a theme involved, you can easily venture into costume territory. Keep your look cool, clean, and contemporary by building around one or two strong pieces. Wearing a gold button blazer? Maybe leave that captain’s hat at home. After all, you’re not really gonna be manning a ship. But we bet you’ll look good not doing it!

Tuesday Tunes: Charli XCX

Twenty-one, born and raised in England, and obsessed with Disney… Allow us to introduce Charli XCX. If you haven’t heard of her, then you’ve definitely heard her music. Remember the über catchy Icona Pop single I Love It? Yep, Charli XCX wrote it. She’s shared the stage with Azealia Banks and opened for Peaches, Robyn, and Coldplay. Want to keep reading her resume? She also toured with Marina and the Diamonds, Ellie Goulding, and Paramore. It’s been a trip around the block, in the best possible way of course.

True Romance was released last year to moderate success and with the promise of a third studio album in the works, plus a super rad collab with Iggy Azalea (click play on FancyClueless fans will love the tribute), we’re thinking 2014 is gonna be a good year for Charli EX-SEE-EX. Her music has been dubbed “goth pop” and “dark pop,” but does it really matter? A heavy internet presence says no, along with signature XCX styled sounds: ear-crunching beats and a heavy handed dose of sparkly 80s synths which keep the sound from actually becoming goth, if you catch our drift.

Her newest single SuperLove is out on the interwebz, but we’ve also included the videos for Fancy, You (Ha-Ha-Ha), and Nuclear Seasons here for you. Because more Charli couldn’t hurt, y’know? We’d recommend turning up the volume. While you treat your ears, peep Charli XCX’s style in the gallery below and check out our inspired GoJane picks. Let us know what you think. Are you a fan?

Coachella Fashion Roundup: Instagram Edition

It’s a wrap, ladies! Coachella 2014 officially came to a close last night, and we’re officially entering that take-us-back-to-the-desert withdrawal phase. (What do you mean we have to wait 365 days?!) We hate to say it, but it’s also time to give your floral headpieces, lacy short shorts, and oversized crocheted numbers a well-deserved break. (It’s only temporary, relax.) So to properly bid Adios! to the best weekend(s) ever, we’ve rounded up our favorite sun-worshipping styles from Weekend Two, Instagram Edition, to get those fashion wheels a-turnin’ for summer. Until next year, Coachella-heads. It’s been real.

Microtrend: “High” Fashion (Also, Happy 420!)

There’s a certain counterculture symbol that is budding into a mainstream fashion trend. Sure, it’s still taboo for most people out there. But all of a sudden rocking a gigantic maryjane leaf emblazoned across your chest is somewhat acceptable. Maybe it’s because most people still don’t know what it truly represents. (Ummmm…where have you been?) Or maybe people are just chilling out with the judging these days. Or maybe, just maybe, all this political uproar against or for the pardoning of the pot is getting everyone lit up about the cause…and what better way to show your support than with a stoney-bologna tee, hat, or chain?

Whatever the reason, we quite enjoy seeing this print on some of our favorite fashion bloggers and celebrities. But while everyone is standing at the front lines screaming “Legalize it!” or “Don’t legalize it!” we’re just saying, “Daaaaang, that bud (print) is dank!” Of course, we’re speaking from a fashion point of view because we certainly did not inhale. But these girls may have…

Coachella Music Recap: Weekend One

After a sun-baked weekend of braving gusty winds and wayyyyy too much dust, we’re back. We made it through the crush of 90,000 people per day to find that we’re exhausted, yet elated with our experience. Festivals are, at the end of the day, all about the music, so let’s get to it with our favorite moments.

Yeah, no big deal, we got to see most of the guest appearances (we can’t teleport, duh), and they didn’t disappoint. Nas ripped it up on stage with guest performances by Jay Z and Diddy, and trust us when we say the crowd went nuts. Pharrell with Gwen Stefani, Snoop, Diddy, Diplo, and Nelly (we can’t even – aaahhhhhhhhh). Plus, we were lucky enough to see Beyoncé make an appearance with her sister Solange at the Gobi Tent ending the set with “Losing You” which pretty much caused the entire crowd to become a giant sing-a-long/dance-a-long.

Friday saw our favorite rockers Haim ruling the Outdoor stage with sassy goodness. The lucky crowd was also treated to an impromptu jam because Haim can freaking shred like bosses. Our favorite weird, kinda wacky gig on Friday would have to be The Knife (super rad Swedish electronic duo; Wiki them). We’re talkin’ teal togas and abstract dance… Yes! The night closed with Outkast. They opened with “Bombs Over Baghdad” which got us all booty shakin’. But hearing “Prototype” live was a huge luxury and nearly brought us to tears. Guys, it’s been years since they’ve been on a stage. Is that eye opening enough to appreciate what happened at Coachella? We would definitely say yes.

By the time we had fully woken up on Saturday, Future Islands was about to start their set, and it was glorious, energetic, and just the tonic we needed for later. Why? We’ll tell you why. A chilly wind and sandstorm had descended upon the festival grounds. Through the dust and haze Lorde sang (enchanting) and spoke to the crowd for a while (we love you, but we’re not your diary). Frank Black of The Pixies still sounds like he’s twenty. Queens of the Stone Age brought a ton of energy to the stage. Needless to say, Saturday night saw us cold, tired, and dusty. Thankfully, Pharrell and Nas let us end the night on a high note.

Suddenly, just like that, Sunday was already happening. Neutral Milk Hotel seemed to be a solid standby that eventually lost their crowd. What with all the rules – no cell phones, no pictures, and the screens that didn’t show the band – should we be surprised? A bit of Little Dragon went a long way to soothe the soul. Later, after a much needed grub break, we waited for Lana. It was the sardine can crush all over again. The set started late, and she floated out with dark hair. Lana Del Ray spoke and communicated with the crowd like she never has before. What old SNL live performance? This was new. She ended her set hugging and greeting her fans while being showered with Coachella-esque gifts (think flower crowns). It was certainly something.

We waited to meet with our friends to see Arcade Fire. Beck was finishing up at the Coachella stage, the faint thump of Disclosure distantly competed, and we sat on a blanket nomming on a delicious ice cream bar. Need we say more about Arcade Fire? We feel we don’t have to, because their pedigree speaks for itself. The festival couldn’t have ended on a better note.

Coachella Fashion Roundup: Weekend One

Rise and shine, Coachella-heads. Now that you’re finally showing signs of life after your eventful weekend in the dusty desert, have a seat (or you know, continue to lie down) and watch as we take you through some of our favorite looks from the first weekend of Coachella 2014. Bold prints, bindis, matchy-matchy sets, statement everythings, and 90s inspired duds galore… We gotta say, we’re pretty darn pleased with what we saw on the lawn. (You really did listen to us, didn’t you?) And since Coachella fashion always seems to set the trend for summer styles to come, we’d pay close attention if we were you, especially if you didn’t get the chance to head towards the sand this time around. For those of you who purchased tickets for weekend number two… No excuses!

How To Wear A Bodysuit: A Guide To The One-Piece Wonder

❤️ By Amy Tsai

Us nineties’ kids remember the bodysuit well. Like jelly sandals (those are back too now!) and slap bracelets (sadly these are not, or else we would buy a dozen) the bodysuit was a wardrobe staple, even if it was a pain getting in and out of the girls’ bathroom before recess ended. But you nineties’ babies who didn’t grow up with bodysuits of every color in your closet may not be as familiar with them, having only seen them on your favorite celebrities in magazine spreads or on concert stages, which, let’s face it, may not be as helpful when it comes to real-world application.

Since bodysuits have come back in a big way now, we’ve put together a little guide that will hopefully cast aside any questions you may have and erase those doubts that still linger about wearing them, because yes, you DO need a bodysuit in your life and yes, you CAN pull it off.

So what exactly is a bodysuit?

Celebrities Without Bottoms
A bodysuit is a close-fitting, often stretchy one-piece clothing item that covers the torso and may resemble a bathing suit or a dancer’s leotard. Since its inception, the bodysuit has transformed from basic undergarment (with that gymnast uniform / superhero costume silhouette) to diversified style superstar, its various cuts bedecked and bedazzled for pop princess performances and donned by starlets galore in glamorous magazine editorials.

But you are aware none of those stars are wearing pants. You expect me to go out like that?

We know, we know. It’s kinda hard to wear a bodysuit by itself without looking like you dropped trou somewhere and forgot to pick them back up again. While bodysuits are often shown sans bottoms, which can make them a little intimidating, they are actually made to coexist with other garments and extremely wearable, since you can style them in a multitude of ways.

Okay, so what are some ways to wear a bodysuit?

We’re betting that “how to wear a bodysuit” is an oft-Googled phrase, but really, you can wear a bodysuit like you would any other top. Except it can shine both as the highlight of an outfit and as its infrastructure. Need an example? Here are some of our favorite under-wear looks…

1. Under sheer and open weave tops – Got a holey mesh tank or a completely see-through crochet top that leaves little to the imagination? A bodysuit would be the perfect base.

96808Ace Of Basic Sleeveless Bodysuit / Good Sport Netted Mesh Cut-Out Tank / Chiffon Button-Up Sleeveless Blouse / Vintage High-Waisted Skinnies

2. Under high-waisted bottoms – What’s the point of buying those high-cut jeans if you’re just gonna cover them up with a long top? Show off that extra-high waistline (and/or booty) with a perfectly tucked-in bodysuit.

3. Under cropped tops and tanks with deep-cut sides – Not too keen on exposing your belly or showing that side-boob? But those cropped tops and muscle tanks are sooooo cute… Not to worry. Bodysuits to the rescue!

97042Acid Wash Ladder Back Bodysuit / City Of Love Paris Cropped Tank / Disobey Graphic Muscle Tank / Ankle Length Zipper Skinny Jeans

4. Under wide-leg pants and skater skirts – If you’re going for flowy or flared on the bottom, you should probably try to stay as slim as possible on the top. And no shirt will ever be as close of a fit to your body as a bodysuit. Come on, it says it right in the name.

5. Under kimonos and other statement pieces – We here consider a kimono a top (rather than outerwear); it’s generally the statement piece of an outfit, right? So we definitely don’t want something underneath it that will interfere with the silhouette or look in general. Add a pop of color, maybe, but steal focus, no way. That’s where a solid little bodysuit comes in handy. (If you’re feeling extra daring and your kimono is of a length that is respectable to you, try doing the no-pants thing. Cinch the waist with a belt, and you’ve got a look that’s runway-ready.)

97691Sleek Attack Shiny Leotard Romper / Tropical Perfection Kimono / So Ethereal Crochet Kimono / High-Waisted Ankle Length Jeans

I’m still not convinced. Why should I opt for a bodysuit instead of a plain ol’ shirt?

What a bodysuit has that a regular top doesn’t is that body-hugging effect of being like a second skin, and with that come a ton of benefits…

1. It eliminates bulk – Have you ever tried getting a tucked-in shirt to lay flat? It’s darn near impossible. With more fabric comes the tendency to bunch up, and you cannot wear a tight little pencil skirt or some liquid leather leggings with folds of fabric showing up underneath. And you thought panty lines were bad!

2. It stays put – Even if you do get your shirt to behave, odds are it won’t stay that way. A bodysuit knows its place in your ensemble and stays there until you tell it otherwise.

3. It flatters your body – For those of you who are reading this and thinking “It’s too tight!” (or for the drama queens, “Why would I wrap myself up like a sausage in a skin-tight casing?”) the bodysuit is actually quite slimming. That snug fit is exactly what you want, because it acts as shapewear, holding in what needs to be held in while also accentuating what needs to be shown off.

Fine, but this is like a baby’s onesie. How will I go to the bathroom?

Well, like the best baby’s onesies, most of today’s bodysuits have snap button closures at the crotch. So no, you will not have to peel off your outer garments one by one and hang them all on your stall door just to make a quick stop at the ladies’ room. Simply pull apart and fasten again when you’re done.

I might be a little intrigued now. But how come I don’t see that many people wearing bodysuits if they’re so in?

Celebrities With Bottoms

Bodysuits are actually all over the place. If you’re not seeing them, it’s probably because most of the time they look just like regular tops. Take a gander at the collage above. Yup, alllll bodysuits.

So those stars all wear bodysuits? Huh. Is there one in particular who wears them all the time?

Rihanna

If we had to pick a bodysuit ambassador, it would have to be Rihanna. Girly has one of every kind – basic, striped, netted, mesh, even turtleneck – and rocks them all a million different ways, onstage and on her off days. If you need a bodysuit babe to look up to (and Google) RiRi is it.

Miley Cyrus

(Buuuuut Miley Cyrus comes in at a close second. Her love for bodysuits is just as strong; it’s her love for bottoms that’s a little lacking, as you can see.)

Won’t it be hard to recreate their looks though?

Not at all! Need an example? We’ve done one for you.

Fashion Designers & Their Famous Furry Friends

Ah, it’s all about the finer things in life, isn’t it? And no one knows that better than famous designers and their furry friends. These precious pooches and coddled cats really live the refined life in junior sized couture, comfy beds, and grooming treatments that probably surpass our own.

Choupette Lagerfeld has her own iPad, two maids, and eats at the table with the Kaiser himself. Would we expect anything less? Jason Wu was inspired by his adorable kitties Peaches and Jinxy. Bean Altuzarra matches Joseph in tiny hooded parkas and crewneck tops. Gaspar Herrera has been forever immortalized by Carolina Herrera in an adorable puppy print.

Must we go on? Get to clicking already! Do you have a “pet”? (We use the term “pet” loosely here since they’re family members more than anything.) What’s the most “designer” thing you’ve ever done for them? We’re nosy and want to know.

Style Crush: Emma Watson

One of the biggest obstacles that young Hollywood faces is the ability to jump ship from child star to major star. Fortunately for Emma Watson, she’s waaay past that. Let’s face it, Hermione Granger is all grown up now, and life after Potter is looking pretty amazing. At the age of only 23, she’s already made some major waves in both Hollywood and the fashion world. The best part? She’s only just begun.

If the last Watson film you caught was a Harry Potter flick, please step out from under that rock you’ve been living under. Not only did our girl nail it as the free-spirited Sam in Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower, but she also very accurately portrayed the infamous ex-reality star Alexis Neiers as Nicki in Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring. Let’s also not forget about Watson’s very memorable cameo in Seth Rogen’s This Is The End (in a nutshell, she threatens to kill Rogen and his buddies with a shovel). More recently, Watson rocked some pretty gnarly dreads in Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, which has already grossed an estimated $44 million in its first weekend. If that doesn’t impress you, get this: rumor also has it that Sofia Coppola has Watson in mind to play Ariel in the live-action rendition of The Little Mermaid. Uh, is there a petition out there that’s rallying to make this happen? Because we already signed it. Yesterday.

As if homegirl’s hectic Hollywood schedule wasn’t enough, the actress-turned-fashionista has been turning heads with her classic-meets-modern-with-a-side-of-edge style. Burberry, Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, and Vera Wang are just a couple of heavy hitters that Watson has been sporting on and off the red carpet, and damn, does she make them look good. From tuxedos to cut-out numbers to wearing dresses with pants (game changer), Watson has risked it all for the love of fashion. Who would have thought that the frizzy-haired wizard we all knew would go from geek to chic overnight? Now that’s a spell we don’t want to break. Take a look at some of Emma Watson’s major moments in fashion below.

How To: Ugly Shoe Trend

It’s all over the runways and showing up on the blogosphere. That’s right… Pool slides, double buckle slippers, flatforms, mules, and granola girl styled sandals are all making a splash just in time for spring and summer. But how does one wear this trend (other than just slip your feet in, of course)? All of these styles can look great if you pair them with the right looks. And who doesn’t love to sport a bit of comfy footwear instead of a painful stiletto? Beauty doesn’t always have to be pain.

Need more proof? Vogue Paris styled an entire editorial of models parading around in high-priced double buckle slippers with – wait for it – socks. Famous ladies sporting chunky sandals: Chloë Sevigny, Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, and the Olsen twins. Céline, Miu Miu, Alexander Wang, Giambattista Valli… They’re all originators of this resurgence. Can we get a resounding “amen” for Phoebe Philo? Along with the #Normcore renaissance, it’s a time of reverting to simplicity.

But why is ugly in? Comfort is a big factor, right? And comfort is cool right now. Flat shoes are in and this look is original and practical. However, let’s not get too crazy here. It can be ugly, but it still has to be chic. And it’s also about irony and nostalgia. Who wore Adidas pool slides during summer camp? Cue raised hands. Check out the collage for some ideas on how to style this trend.

StreetFashionCollage

Key points for pulling off this look:

  • Rock a great pedicure.
  • Don’t do tie-dye or anything that screams “hippie” (we’ll give you a pass, Kate Moss). We want to modernize, not go on a throwback rampage.
  • Half socks in mesh or patterns can update slides.
  • Play with contrast. Chunky shoes suggest that you need to be sleek, tailored, and minimal for balance.
  • Try to opt for an updated color palette.
  • Dress up the look with gleaming accessories and a pop of color on your lips if you’re a lipstick kind of gal. (We’re thinking an orange lippy, yes?)

If you’re ready to be a little subversive with your fashion, take a pick from our selection of sandals for the perfect look.

What do you guys think about this trend? Let us know in the comments.

It’s all about the Tuesday tune-age over here at the office. We’ve been thinking about Coachella since it’s coming up (yay), and one of our favorite up-and-coming artists, BANKS, will be there (yay, again). But who is Banks?

Let us give you the 411. Her name is Jillian Banks (styled BANKS). She’s twenty-five, based out of LA, and her major label debut album is coming out this spring. Her lyrics are dark and soulful – think R&B with seductive electronic touches – and she recently toured with The Weeknd. In an era where social media reigns king, Banks chooses to let her management team maintain her Facebook page and Twitter account. However, Banks listed her personal digits with the statement, “if you ever want to talk.” Way to make us swoon; please be our BFF.

The bottom line is that we’re in love with her voice and style (she seems to favor black). Peep our gallery of her super cool style, shop our inspired picks, and make sure to do it while listening to her amazing tunes.

Texas Bound: 2014 SXSW Recap

It’s as if spring heralds the return of a new year with the advent of what is now being dubbed “festival season.” Epic among industry names, SXSW (South By Southwest) is an amalgam of films, music performances, and conferences that takes place annually in Austin, Texas. But let’s get down to the nitty gritty about the happenings that took place this year.

We will never stop loving Lady Gaga for her reinvention and theatrics, and as the keynote presenter and headlining act, she did not disappoint. In a one-hour show, sponsored by Doritos, an oversized roasting spit and a mechanical pig functioned as eccentric props, and a vomit artist threw up on Gaga’s chest (phew!). Stuffed with creative vision and just the right touch of weird, Lady Gaga wasn’t all about theatrics and threw out earnest vocals that sucked in the crowd.

And the list of heavy-hitters didn’t stop there. 50 Cent (genuinely showing off an “indie” reinvention), Kanye, Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, Steve Aoki, Skrillex, Childish Gambino, and Soundgarden (for all you 90s lovers) all made appearances. One of our fave chicks, Charli XCX, performed along with LA buzz bands and K-pop stars. Kelis – who apparently also had a themed food truck to coincide with her new release – served up jerk ribs, duck confit sliders, BBQ, and coleslaw.

A$AP Rocky premiered his film “SVDDXNLY,” and a Jimi Hendrix biopic was shown with Andre 3000 playing the doomed rocker.  Snoop Dogg, Phantogram, and The 1975 had live tapings (we’re going to start scouring YouTube to relive those moments). And who wouldn’t want to see the fabulous Janelle Monae belt out tunes? Let’s just say SXSW knows how to serve up a feast for the senses, even for the nerds – all hail Neil deGrasse Tyson!

But we can’t end this post without addressing the tragedy that occurred. It’s a reminder that at the end of the day nothing is as important as the fragility of life and our loved ones. In spite of all the grief, let’s remember all of the great things that happened during SXSW and appreciate the goodness that came out of it.

Style Crush: Saoirse Ronan (Also, Happy St. Patrick’s Day!)

Okay, let’s address the most FAQ about this blue-eyed babe. Her name is pronounced sear-sha. Seeeeeeeeeaaaarrr-Shaaaa!

Is it a coincidence that we chose to feature an Irish actress as our latest GoJane style crush…on St. Patrick’s Day? Maybe. Maybe not. Okay, we did it on purpose. We’ve had our eye on this 19-year-old international superstar for some time now. We first noticed her as a little rabble-rouser in Atonement with Keira Knightley, then as Mark Wahlberg’s precocious daughter in The Lovely Bones, and thennnnn she blew our minds as an ass-kicking assassin in Hanna along side Cate Blanchett. Now she stars in Wes Craven’s latest masterpiece, The Grand Budapest Hotel. The great thing about last week’s release of TGBH? We are seeing her all over the place. She’s hitting the red carpet for its worldwide premieres, she’s doing tons of TV/Web interviews, and she’s just soaking up that limelight all around town. Here’s a collage of Miss Saoirse Ronan sporting some lust-worthy fashions. And please try not to get lost in those mesmerizing blue eyes.

The 2014 Academy Awards: The Bests Of The Best

Star-studded selfie at Academy AwardsHollywood’s most glamorous night of the year survived a weekend of severe California weather (we know, we know, we’re little bitches when it comes to the rain) to go off without a hitch last night, much thanks to host Ellen DeGeneres, who filled an otherwise predictable evening (we called all the winners) with jokes and stunts that we’re still talking about today. The queen of daytime/nice showed us Edgy Ellen (embarrassing Jonah Hill and pissing off Liza Minnelli in the process), passed out scratchers as an Oscar consolation prize, and of course, took a selfie that will inevitably go down as one of the most star-studded in Twitter history. That pic obviously takes the cake for best selfie of the night, but it’s only one of several bests we laid our eyes upon. Here’s our take on the 86th Annual Academy Awards…

Best Red Carpet Color:  Blue

The winning color of the night has to go to the color blue, its cool but classic shade of navy swathed around Best Actress nominees Amy Adams and Sandra Bullock, who may have gone home empty-handed but would eventually take their places on this morning’s numerous Best Dressed lists. A softer and lighter hue, dubbed “Nairobi blue,” was the talk of the red carpet and still trending today, entering our fashion vernacular as an it-color, worn by an it-girl whom we’re giving a Best of her own.

Best “Best Night Ever”: Lupita Nyong’o

The darling of this awards season and its plethora of red carpets has to be Lupita Nyong’o of Oscar-winning Best Film 12 Years A Slave, who scooped up her own Academy Award in a princess-worthy dress that immediately elicited comparisons to Cinderella. Fittingly, the then-newcomer-now-it-girl had herself a Cinderella night, dancing with Pharrell and tearfully accepting her big prize, all in a whimsical, sparkly headband that now has its very own Twitter page.

Best Dress You Didn’t See: Jennifer Lawrence

While she may have lost out to Lupita on the trophy, J-Law was still good ol’ J-Law. She did not disappoint and, in true J-Law fashion, continued her red carpet antics by photobombing her Hollywood colleagues and even taking a spill in her red peplum number that proved more GIF-able than last year’s little trip-up on the way to the podium. But the Best Supporting Actress nominee eventually survived the awards show and stunned later that night in a sheer mesh, mirrored, Tom Ford mini that really put the “party” in “after party.”

Best Photobomb: Benedict Cumberbatch

And speaking of photobombs, a good one can be hard to pull off. It delights us to no end that it’s become a favorite celebrity pastime. J-Law seems to do one on every red carpet, and last night she was joined by Bill Murray, Jared Leto, Portia De Rossi, etc. But fan favorite Benedict Cumberbatch is earning our title of best. The aerial position, the funny face, the sheer number of people affected… Yeah, we’d say you were the photobomb.com, Benedict.

Best Hair: Jared Leto

We all knew Jared Leto would snatch up the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. What we waited for with bated breath was to see what he would do with those magnificent locks of his. Thankfully he ditched his Golden Globes man-bun, which looked more like an afterthought from showering at the gym, letting his mane run free this time around. And that damn ombre put the rest of us to shame.

Best Impromptu Performance: Meryl Streep

No explanation necessary.Meryl Streep and Pharrell Williams dance at Academy Awards

Worst Impromptu Performance: John Travolta

Remember how smoooooth he was as Danny Zuko in Grease, one of our all-time favorite sing-a-long movies? Well, you’d think the movie musical legend would know better than to call Broadway diva and Frozen actress Idina Menzel “Adele Dazeem” before her performance of “Let It Go,” which would eventually win for Best Original Song. Travolta is lucky this is 2014 and not 2004, or he would have more than massage therapists on this tail (pun not intended but totally appreciated. Ha!). ‘Cause rabid Wicked fangirls are wayyyyy less forgiving.

Best Midnight Mid-Awards-Night Snack: Pizza

When Ellen promised her hungry A-list attendees a mid-show snack, no one knew she would actually deliver. And she did, literally. Brad Pitt passed out plates, Pharrell provided the ten-gallon donation hat, Harvey Weinstein chipped in two hundred dollars for the poor delivery guy (who had no idea when he started his shift that he’d be visiting millions of homes last night), and the celebs unapologetically chowed down, justifying the behavior of those of us doing the exact same thing from home.
