White Hot, White Out: All White Outfits For Spring & Summer

The weather is warming up, and there’s no better way to welcome it than with a white haute outfit. (Lolz, we’re funny.) Anyway, we’re all about a cool monochrome look. As an added plus, they were huge on Spring ’14 runways.

Yes, white outfits are notoriously hard to keep clean. Marinara sauce, salsa, wine (or sangria if you so prefer), and the ever ubiquitous presence of, ahem, feminine issues… We’d be scared, too. But don’t be! A Tide pen tucked into your purse can really help in a pinch.

An all-white outfit is clean, crisp, and modern. How can one resist? If you think a monochrome outfit is boring, we dare you to try the trend out and see what you’re able to create with the perfect blank canvas.

Top Tips:

- Add pops of color with accessories, shoes, or a bright lip.

- Keep textures interesting and layered.

- Play with different silhouettes and volume (e.g. loose on the top, fitted on the bottom).

Coachella Music Recap: Weekend One

After a sun-baked weekend of braving gusty winds and wayyyyy too much dust, we’re back. We made it through the crush of 90,000 people per day to find that we’re exhausted, yet elated with our experience. Festivals are, at the end of the day, all about the music, so let’s get to it with our favorite moments.

Yeah, no big deal, we got to see most of the guest appearances (we can’t teleport, duh), and they didn’t disappoint. Nas ripped it up on stage with guest performances by Jay Z and Diddy, and trust us when we say the crowd went nuts. Pharrell with Gwen Stefani, Snoop, Diddy, Diplo, and Nelly (we can’t even – aaahhhhhhhhh). Plus, we were lucky enough to see Beyoncé make an appearance with her sister Solange at the Gobi Tent ending the set with “Losing You” which pretty much caused the entire crowd to become a giant sing-a-long/dance-a-long.

Friday saw our favorite rockers Haim ruling the Outdoor stage with sassy goodness. The lucky crowd was also treated to an impromptu jam because Haim can freaking shred like bosses. Our favorite weird, kinda wacky gig on Friday would have to be The Knife (super rad Swedish electronic duo; Wiki them). We’re talkin’ teal togas and abstract dance… Yes! The night closed with Outkast. They opened with “Bombs Over Baghdad” which got us all booty shakin’. But hearing “Prototype” live was a huge luxury and nearly brought us to tears. Guys, it’s been years since they’ve been on a stage. Is that eye opening enough to appreciate what happened at Coachella? We would definitely say yes.

By the time we had fully woken up on Saturday, Future Islands was about to start their set, and it was glorious, energetic, and just the tonic we needed for later. Why? We’ll tell you why. A chilly wind and sandstorm had descended upon the festival grounds. Through the dust and haze Lorde sang (enchanting) and spoke to the crowd for a while (we love you, but we’re not your diary). Frank Black of The Pixies still sounds like he’s twenty. Queens of the Stone Age brought a ton of energy to the stage. Needless to say, Saturday night saw us cold, tired, and dusty. Thankfully, Pharrell and Nas let us end the night on a high note.

Suddenly, just like that, Sunday was already happening. Neutral Milk Hotel seemed to be a solid standby that eventually lost their crowd. What with all the rules - no cell phones, no pictures, and the screens that didn’t show the band – should we be surprised? A bit of Little Dragon went a long way to soothe the soul. Later, after a much needed grub break, we waited for Lana. It was the sardine can crush all over again. The set started late, and she floated out with dark hair. Lana Del Ray spoke and communicated with the crowd like she never has before. What old SNL live performance? This was new. She ended her set hugging and greeting her fans while being showered with Coachella-esque gifts (think flower crowns). It was certainly something.

We waited to meet with our friends to see Arcade Fire. Beck was finishing up at the Coachella stage, the faint thump of Disclosure distantly competed, and we sat on a blanket nomming on a delicious ice cream bar. Need we say more about Arcade Fire? We feel we don’t have to, because their pedigree speaks for itself. The festival couldn’t have ended on a better note.

Fashion Designers & Their Famous Furry Friends

Ah, it’s all about the finer things in life, isn’t it? And no one knows that better than famous designers and their furry friends. These precious pooches and coddled cats really live the refined life in junior sized couture, comfy beds, and grooming treatments that probably surpass our own.

Choupette Lagerfeld has her own iPad, two maids, and eats at the table with the Kaiser himself. Would we expect anything less? Jason Wu was inspired by his adorable kitties Peaches and Jinxy. Bean Altuzarra matches Joseph in tiny hooded parkas and crewneck tops. Gaspar Herrera has been forever immortalized by Carolina Herrera in an adorable puppy print.

Must we go on? Get to clicking already! Do you have a “pet”? (We use the term “pet” loosely here since they’re family members more than anything.) What’s the most “designer” thing you’ve ever done for them? We’re nosy and want to know.

How To: Ugly Shoe Trend

It’s all over the runways and showing up on the blogosphere. That’s right… Pool slides, Birkenstocks, flatforms, mules, and granola girl styled sandals are all making a splash just in time for spring and summer. But how does one wear this trend (other than just slip your feet in, of course)? All of these styles can look great if you pair them with the right looks. And who doesn’t love to sport a bit of comfy footwear instead of a painful stiletto? Beauty doesn’t always have to be pain.

Need more proof? Vogue Paris styled an entire editorial of models parading around in Birkenstocks with – wait for it – socks. Famous ladies sporting chunky sandals: Chloë Sevigny, Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, and the Olsen twins. Céline, Miu Miu, Alexander Wang, Giambattista Valli… They’re all originators of this resurgence. Can we get a resounding “amen” for Phoebe Philo? Along with the #Normcore renaissance, it’s a time of reverting to simplicity.

But why is ugly in? Comfort is a big factor, right? And comfort is cool right now. Flat shoes are in and this look is original and practical. However, let’s not get too crazy here. It can be ugly, but it still has to be chic. And it’s also about irony and nostalgia. Who wore Adidas pool slides during summer camp? Cue raised hands. Check out the collage for some ideas on how to style this trend.

StreetFashionCollage

Key points for pulling off this look:

  • Rock a great pedicure.
  • Don’t do tie-dye or anything that screams “hippie” (we’ll give you a pass, Kate Moss). We want to modernize, not go on a throwback rampage.
  • Half socks in mesh or patterns can update slides.
  • Play with contrast. Chunky shoes suggest that you need to be sleek, tailored, and minimal for balance.
  • Try to opt for an updated color palette.
  • Dress up the look with gleaming accessories and a pop of color on your lips if you’re a lipstick kind of gal. (We’re thinking an orange lippy, yes?)

If you’re ready to be a little subversive with your fashion, take a pick from our selection of sandals for the perfect look. What do you guys think about this trend? Let us know in the comments.

Tuesday Tunes: BANKS

It’s all about the Tuesday tune-age over here at the office. We’ve been thinking about Coachella since it’s coming up (yay), and one of our favorite up-and-coming artists, BANKS, will be there (yay, again). But who is Banks?

Let us give you the 411. Her name is Jillian Banks (styled BANKS). She’s twenty-five, based out of LA, and her major label debut album is coming out this spring. Her lyrics are dark and soulful – think R&B with seductive electronic touches – and she recently toured with The Weeknd. In an era where social media reigns king, Banks chooses to let her management team maintain her Facebook page and Twitter account. However, Banks listed her personal digits with the statement, “if you ever want to talk.” Way to make us swoon; please be our BFF.

The bottom line is that we’re in love with her voice and style (she seems to favor black). Peep our gallery of her super cool style, shop our inspired picks, and make sure to do it while listening to her amazing tunes.

Texas Bound: 2014 SXSW Recap

It’s as if spring heralds the return of a new year with the advent of what is now being dubbed “festival season.” Epic among industry names, SXSW (South By Southwest) is an amalgam of films, music performances, and conferences that takes place annually in Austin, Texas. But let’s get down to the nitty gritty about the happenings that took place this year.

We will never stop loving Lady Gaga for her reinvention and theatrics, and as the keynote presenter and headlining act, she did not disappoint. In a one-hour show, sponsored by Doritos, an oversized roasting spit and a mechanical pig functioned as eccentric props, and a vomit artist threw up on Gaga’s chest (phew!). Stuffed with creative vision and just the right touch of weird, Lady Gaga wasn’t all about theatrics and threw out earnest vocals that sucked in the crowd.

And the list of heavy-hitters didn’t stop there. 50 Cent (genuinely showing off an “indie” reinvention), Kanye, Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, Steve Aoki, Skrillex, Childish Gambino, and Soundgarden (for all you 90s lovers) all made appearances. One of our fave chicks, Charli XCX, performed along with LA buzz bands and K-pop stars. Kelis – who apparently also had a themed food truck to coincide with her new release – served up jerk ribs, duck confit sliders, BBQ, and coleslaw.

A$AP Rocky premiered his film “SVDDXNLY,” and a Jimi Hendrix biopic was shown with Andre 3000 playing the doomed rocker.  Snoop Dogg, Phantogram, and The 1975 had live tapings (we’re going to start scouring YouTube to relive those moments). And who wouldn’t want to see the fabulous Janelle Monae belt out tunes? Let’s just say SXSW knows how to serve up a feast for the senses, even for the nerds – all hail Neil deGrasse Tyson!

But we can’t end this post without addressing the tragedy that occurred. It’s a reminder that at the end of the day nothing is as important as the fragility of life and our loved ones. In spite of all the grief, let’s remember all of the great things that happened during SXSW and appreciate the goodness that came out of it.

Living on the Wedge: Then and Now

We definitely love wearing wedges for their comfort and super fun silhouette, but have you ever wondered when they got popular? If you’ve ever wanted to know, join us for a super quick history lesson.

Salvatore Ferragamo had already established a pretty fancy clientele list catering to the Hollywood elite (Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, and Greta Garbo to name a few), but with WWII looming in the near future there was a scarcity of leather and rubber due to war efforts to preserve resources. And so wood and cork wedges were born. Ferragamo strapped stars like Judy Garland into rainbow platform wedges and voila! – a new trend took off. After WWII the popularity of the wedge waned but then resurrected in the 1970s with the addition of platforms for women and men. We’ve included a collage below of rad vintage Ferragamo styles, vintage wedges from the 70s, and a pic of Audrey Hepburn (the definition of a lady) in slip-on wedges.

Microtrend: Fresh as a Daisy

Remember making cute daisy chains with your friends during recess? We adore daisies for the memories. Plus, if you grew up during the 90s, you’ll totally understand why we can’t seem to separate Drew Barrymore and daisies. Those two just seem to fit, right? Anyway, if you’re feeling nostalgic, throw on something with scattered daisies for an oh-so-cool update, because they have made a comeback. Take a peep at some cool street-style shots for a bit of inspiration.

10 Sweaters To Take On Winter

Yes, we’ve been spared the #PolarVortex, but this post is for everyone that is freezing their tookus off. Since summer isn’t here yet (*sob*) we’ve rounded up our ten favorite sweaters to combat the winter blues. (We may not have snow, but we like to pretend and dress for it anyway. Just let us have it, ok?!) Which brings us to the all-important question of how you like to style your favorite knit. Do you wear a sweater with skinny jeans or leggings? Or are you more of a skirt kind of gal? (Weather permitting, of course.) Let us know in the comments below and check out our fave picks.

Inspiration Gallery: Quirky, Graphic, and Colorful

Nope, winter doldrums haven’t surfaced over here. Not to make subzero inhabitants weep or whatever, but we’re experiencing sunny 70 degree weather. However, we care a lot about all of our readers and feel it’s time to blast your peepers full of color, pattern, and all things fun and quirky. Just remember, warm weather will be back before you know it, and we’re here to help with a little pick-me-up.

Are you ready? This gallery is a sumptuous feast, and if you’re a neutral loving girl it’ll be a one-two style punch of COLOR, COLOR, COLOR. Did you imagine those words blinking like a neon sign? We did. Okay, go click through this gallery.

Now that you’ve seen the gallery, we gotta say it takes a certain kind of devil-may-care attitude to step out of your comfort zone and wear something that will wildly draw attention to you, positive and negative alike. But hey, life is short, and if you feel like wearing mustard yellow shoes with sparkles, then you better darn well wear them. After all, isn’t fashion all about dressing for you? Duh, rhetorical question.

Anyway, nothing says style like planning a season ahead, so go ahead and peruse the gallery and shop your little heart out with our GoJane inspired picks. Then you better comment and tell us what you got and what you’re styling it with and maybe attach a picture or five, k? K.

Spring 2014 Color Trend: Think Pink

Don’t blame us if we’re springing (hehe) these looks a little early on you. Before you know it, the weather is gonna warm up, and “April showers bring May flowers” will be in full swing. Yeah, pastel is a pretty foolproof and somewhat traditional warm weather trend, but can you really blame us for showing pink some love? And no, we’re not talking about Malibu Barbie. We’re talking sweet petal perfection consisting of variations on the theme of pale blush and peach.

Wah, wah, wah, we’ve heard the complaints. Pink can feel babyish, prissy, and precious. But hear us out. Shades of blush, ice pink, and peach freshen up your closet like no other. And it can act as a rad secondary color with tomato red, light-catching metallics, and acidic colors like citron. Need some inspiration? Check out the gallery, right meow.

Okay, now that you’ve seen the runway looks you have to ask yourself – isn’t the new year all about getting on board with a fresh start? Try out the trend on pink with our GoJane picks and let us know what you think (rhymes FTW).

Style Crush: Haim

Our love for Haim (insider tip: it rhymes with time) isn’t new (their album dropped last year to hugely positive reviews), but since they’re embarking upon a pretty long tour we thought a kick-off post was fitting. Plus, the 2014 Coachella lineup has been released and big surprise – JAYKAY, NOT - Haim will be playing at this iconic desert festival. (Will you be attending? Come find us. Let’s be friends.)

Okaayyy, we’ll try to stop sounding like the rabid fan girls we kind of are, but seeing Haim live will be a treat for the ears and the eyes. Have you seen these chicks rocking, well, everything? They’ve mastered denim, leather, faded tees, and cropped tops with stylish ease. Their long manes have the perfect amount of that oh-so-easy wave. Their lipst…um, we’ll stop now because it started sounding creepy. Just take a gander at the gallery below for super steezy inspiration.

As for the music? Well, this talented trio of sisters has been compared to Fleetwood Mac with a dash of Wilson Phillips. While the comparisons make total sense, Haim definitely has their own unique take on the music scene. Sit back, relax, and listen to some sweet, sweet tune-age while you browse our take on their style.

Style Crush: Sky Ferreira

She’s young, she’s fun and talented, and she has amazing personalized style. What’s not to like? Sky Ferreira is teetering on the cusp of blowing up. Who would believe that she’s 21 and currently fronting for Yves Saint Laurent (guys, remember the amazing collab with Daft Punk?). Her album Night Time, My Time just dropped last week to solidly positive reviews, and chances are you’ve heard “Everything Is Embarrassing” at some point on the radio. It’s a subdued gem of electronic goodness — the type that is listened to during early morning gridlock (curse that traffic). Check out her cool long-hair-don’t-care style in the gallery below.

Happy Birthday, Katy Perry!

She’s probably not out kissing girls on her birthday (not that we’d judge), but Katy’s catchy tunes and vibrant style combine to create a super dynamo that we want to party with. Plus, she’s a fellow cat lover (check out Kitty Purry), and we are totally down with that. Today is Katy Perry’s 29th birthday, and we want to celebrate with a gallery full of the kooky-cool, Katy. Click through the pics below, ladies.

FYF 2013: Stylin’ Peeps, Performers & Poop

Some of the GoJane bloggers were lucky enough to get our paws on some FYF weekend passes and we were super stoked about the amazing bands and performers on the line up. What’s FYF? Fu*k Yeah Fest is an annual music festival that takes place in our very own home city of Los Angeles which made for: a) a super easy commute, and b) a chance to go with our fave pals. Plus, we binged on I <3 Spicy Pie – the Holy Grail of festival food (there can never be too much pizza).

Needless to say, we had a blast dancing our booties off to STRFKR and Flume, and jammed to Toro Y Moi, Thee Oh Sees, and MGMT. Our two personal faves were a tie between the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Washed Out. There isn’t a better way to get an idea of a huge event than with Instagram. Check out some of our fave Instagram photos from #FYF in the gallery below.

Style Crush: Solange

We all know Beyoncé, but her baby sister Solange is nothin’ to sneeze at. She’s been pretty darn busy, and anyone that has listened to her EP True knows just how talented she is.  Plus, she’s gorgeous and knows how to mix prints and sport her natural ‘do like a boss. Peep Solange doing her thing this weekend at FYF (a musical festival held at L.A. State Historic Park) and make sure to take note of her rad looks in the gallery.
