Candid Crush: 7 Reasons To Crush On Nicole Richie
Can we be honest? Nicole Richie isn’t the only one counting down to tomorrow night’s debut of her VH1 series Candidly Nicole, which marks her return to reality TV as one of its earliest stars. But since the 2003 premiere of The Simple Life, Nicole has evolved into fashion designer, philanthropist, mother, and bonafide style icon, a far cry from the girl who took Arkansas by storm with her then-real-life-bestie. This time she is creator, executive producer, and star all rolled into one with what she calls a “real life comedy,” full of her trademark irreverence and “tongue-planted-firmly-in-cheek” witticisms (that’s totally our favorite place to plant our tongues by the way). The television show is based on her popular web series (twenty million views tells us that that’s an understatement) which itself was based on her also-beloved Twitter, appropriately named by Time as one of last year’s best. So we thought it was only fitting that we use the same famous one- or two-liners today, on the eve of the premiere, to show why we’re totally crushin’ on Fashion Star Nicole Richie…
1. She knows her fashion
Nicole may have started out in the public eye as one-half of a reality show duo, but since then she has immersed herself in House of Harlow 1960, her fashion brand named after her adorable doppelganger daughter. “Fashion gives you the ability to express yourself, your mood; it’s a creative outlet in many ways,” says the website. What began in 2008 as a jewelry line won her “Entrepreneur of the Year” at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards, and she’s not stopping there. Home decor launches next, and HOH will be well on its way to becoming a legitimate lifestyle brand.
2. She doesn’t take herself too seriously
Some celebrities may be overly concerned with image, but Nicole has no problem making fun of herself and will use the show, like her Twitter, to display that self-deprecating humor. She told USA Today, “I’m definitely the butt of the joke in this one too, and I’m very comfortable with it.” (And we can take that quite literally. Her AOL series included a segment about her removing a “tramp stamp.”)
3. She loves her family
Nicole Richie definitely has a star-studded set of kin. Lionel Richie is her father, Michael Jackson was her godfather, and she married Joel Madden of Good Charlotte, becoming sister-in-law to his twin Benji Madden. She also has a six-year-old daughter Harlow and four-year-old son Sparrow, who are as cute as the cutest child star but whom she protects by not picturing them on her social media outlets.
4. She understands relationships
Speaking to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, she admitted to setting up her brother-in-law with current beau Cameron Diaz, telling him, “I’m happy for anyone who is happy, and I want everyone to be surrounded with love.” And an upcoming topic on her show? Online dating.
5. She’s a philanthropist
With her husband Joel, Nicole started the Richie Madden Children’s Foundation which, among other charitable activities, has opened a Beyond Shelter playground for children in low-income neighborhoods and designed the inaugural cup for 7-Eleven’s Coffee Cup With A Cause project.
6. She keeps life interesting
In February Nicole experienced the “greatest moment of [her] life” when she was taken onstage at a Britney Spears concert, strapped into a harness, walked like a dog, and spanked with a whip by her teenaged idol. The evidence of course was on her Instagram for all to envy. And recently she dyed her hair frosting-lavender simply because daughter Harlow asked why her mom didn’t dye her hair when her dad always did.
7. She likes to learn
The thirty-two-year-old seems to have it all and do it all, and now the Richie-Madden family could probably open its own Whole Foods, as Nicole has created an edible garden (wearing a fanny pack and trucker hat) that includes apples, blueberries, strawberries, sugar snap peas, cauliflower, kumquats, zucchini, blood oranges… The list goes on and on. She even raises chickens in a chicken coop (and turtles in a turtle coop!) and told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that she learns by joining online forums.
And that’s exactly what her Candidly Nicole will be about – learning. From professionals in various industries. She said during her press tour, “You know, I love to learn, and I like to explore, and I like to have fun. So I’ve created a space where I can do all three.” Starting tonight, Nicole will be adding more than just gardener to her resume when she starts exploring some different walks of life, and we’re being totally honest when we say that we will be right there with her.
