Remember the opening scene in Clueless when Cher’s outfit is chosen by her outta-this-world closet organizer? If you remember correctly (which you should) the contraption helped to churn out what is known today as one of the most iconic fashion moments in film – Cher’s perfectly plaid top-and-bottom ensemble. And while we still praise Ms. Horowitz’ sartorial preferences to this day, we certainly didn’t think that we could ever pull off that matchy-matchy look… That is, until now.
If our fashion senses are precise (which they always are), matching sets are totally a thing again. We know that I-woke-up-like-this look doesn’t come easy, so just trust us when we say that these identical sets of separates will not only make weekday mornings a little more bearable for you, but you’ll also end up looking pretty darn chic. Need a little guidance on this microtrend?
Here are three easy steps to help you meet your match:
1. Know your body type. As you should know and understand by now, each and every body type is different (that’s what makes us beautiful, duh). So just be realistic with what you feel comfortable in. If you’re still working on that six pack of yours, opt for a longer top or a high-waisted bottom. If your curves haven’t quite come in yet, go for something that will accentuate that waist of yours. Remember, confidence is key. And don’t give up; there is a matching set out there for everyone.
2. Choose a color or a print. The best part about rocking a matching set is that there are about a million different options in terms of colors and prints. With that being said, we’re going to go ahead and leave this decision up to you. (You’re a big girl, right?) A little word of advice though… Don’t be afraid to step outside the box a little. You’ll never know if you don’t try.
3. The finishing touches. This is where things can get a little bit tricky. We know your first instinct is to grab a necklace, some rings, and a bracelet to complete the look, but trust us when we say that accessorizing is not absolutely necessary. Your ‘fit is already a statement in and of itself! If you must accessorize, try a pair of earrings and/or a bold lip color to keep things on the minimal side. Shoes, however, are not optional. In a nutshell, if you’re wearing a print, go with something simple, like a pair of single strap heels. And if you decided on a solid set, a bold, contrast shoe will definitely do.
